Good news and bad news....

By Jonathanrmanion

Today i swapped out my air shocks ( because my Small block murdered one of them...) and started to put the big block shocks up front ( cause my 396 is about to go in there!) and i noticed a massive crack in my frame on the front driver side as i was replace that shock... guessing either my hot rodding with my crate engine did that or my car at one point and time has some serious ponies under the hood. But luckily half the guys in my family are welders (me included) and it won't be much of a big deal to fix. But as an extra irritation one of my shock did come with the washers, rubbbers or the nut, so i had to make an unscheduled trip to town. Must of been a monday shock cause the package was un-opened, Thanks Monroe! Oh back story to my 396, When i got my first chevelle me and my cousin were talkign about making serious power and the fact that he had all kinds of go fast parts laying around the shop. So we were gunna build it up and he'd sell it to me at a family rate. But as you all know my first one was crippled after an encounter with my Future father in law and a ditch going fast. But Fast forward a year or so and i've found a 177 Wieand polished pro street supercharger on criagslist for a "SBC" so i trade a hand full of guns for it and freshened up my small block for it. When it came time to plop it on top i noticed that something was definately wrong, and as i sat it onto it i noticed it was for a BBC!!! needless to say i wasn't happy but i wanted a BBC anyways so i kept it. Mean while my cousin builds the 396 with all the parts laying around and churns out and NASTY mother of a motor. He had it in his 79ish Chevy SWB truck and could murder all four tires instantly and with out stop until he lifted his foot. But decided it was too much for a jacked up truck and built as very nice roller small block for it and set the BBC back in the shop. After so debate and miscommunications we decided to trade BBC for the blower and he got a intake, smaller pulley and belt so he could slap the blower in his truck and i got the 396, a th400 and another driveshaft! So now i am going to be able to make my 70 a little closer to the SS clone i want it to be!

Crate engine with some torque in my Chevelle!

By Jonathanrmanion

Ok so after i plopped the GM Crate engine in my Chevelle (because the engine i have just cammed and painted up was acting up) i had the same problems with the new engine, figured it was maybe a grounding issue, vacuum leak, or maybe time. After much tinkering i gave up and i decided to take it to a shop. Turns out it was all the above. But was told the carb that came on the Crate engine needed rebuild ( i got the crate 350 out of a farm truck) but atleast it ran decent once it was out of idling range. Since i had my mom ride with me to pick it up i had her follow me home in my Mustang. But since i never fixed my Gas Gauge i ran out half way home, luckily i usually keep 5 gallons of gas in the trunk just in case some runs out (me or some one on the side of the road) So i put some gas in her and fired it up and revved the it up so the pump could push the gas through. Then i put it in drive and decided to see if i could get a bark out of the engine with my big tires on. Boy did it ever! It planted real hard and then broke loose round about the same time it blew out the passenger air shock, but i gave it hell to see how far she'd lay rubber. After about 60 feet or so she grab and tore out of there like a scaulled dog. I let off a bit and then really smashed the gas and it bit real hard again , so i let off and did it again, bit down hard again but this time i felt like an earthquake was going on. knowing that this couldn't be be good i tried to limp her home, all the while my car is shuttering and shaking violently. I made it on to dirt and was half way up a hill when heard a loud bang and then it free revved like i was in park. I looked up in my rearview mirror and saw my driveshaft rolling down the hill... So i let it coast backwards to my poor driveshaft and used it as a wheel chock. Once my Mom caught up, we went to my house and got Kayleigh's Truck and pulled it home. After dropping the drive shaft to my first Chevelle i learned that not all 70 Chevelles use the same drive shaft. So i looked around a bit more and found that my 68 Chevelle had the same Drive shaft. So after running to town and buying a ujoint, i got the "pleasure" of driving 45 year old u joints out with a baby sledge hammer, a breaker bar's handle and using a John henry sized sledge hammer as my anvil and a cut off wheel, i bolted it on and was back on the road! only took like 6 hours of crawling around in the mud, swinging a hammer and throwing sparks with my cut off to get it all done... LOL

Tinkered with my Chevelle a little bit today

By Jonathanrmanion

Decided that since i am never going to put a Vinyl top back on my car i needed to get rid of the studs for the chrome trim! So i clipped em down a bit with hoof clippers, the filed em down a bit more with a hand file, then sanded em down with some sand paper and finally smoothed it out with steel wool! I think when i go to put a good paint job on her i will need some body filler because the studs had a small indention all the way around each of them. Mu guess is it is from what ever process they used to install the studs.... Then i got to feeling spunky and gruffed her up and shot her satin black! It looks oh so much better!

Don't tar and feather me here folks, but what do you think?

By Jonathanrmanion

I have been kicking it around and am having a hard time deciding rather i would want to plop a Small block chevy or a Big block chevy between the fenders of my Trans Am. The Small block would be a salty 350 with a tiny bit north of 400 ponies, but the big block would be scratchin at 600 pissed off horses (396 punched out to 434). I still have the original 400 in the garage and some day i will re do it and set back in there, but i was wondering what yall thought of settin a Chevy in my old 'Bird? Oh and if it helps any if i decide to plop the 350 in my Trans Am my chevelle is getting the big block! Either way i will probably re-route the exhaust to kick out in front of my rear tires (i dunno why but i love the idea)

The Need for Speed

By Jonathanrmanion

Ok folks, i know you all have had the need for speed atleast a few times in your life. Me personally, I've had my fair share of close calls with Death when speed was involved. But it has never slowed me down. Has it gotten me to rethink my approach to speed, yes and no. Will i ever slow down? Hell no! To sum up how i feel about it i will use the Quote that my Detachment SGT has posted on his door. - Life's journey is not arrive at your grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out shouting "Holy ****.... What a Ride". So the thing that has been racing through my mind this whole morning is My Z28! It is going to be receiving my Chevelle's Salty Small block after i freshen up the gaskets a bit, and having north of 400 ponies will bring a smile to any ones face... but i am already dreaming of going fast again. I was think of a nasty Big Block, a 427 or a stroked 396 would be nice, with an exhaust that kicks out behind the front tires, probably by cut outs with a switch to open it up, though i have a feeling it would be open more often then not, unless the cops are near by or wintery weather prevents me! Am i crazy or am i just a good old fashioned enthusiast? Either way i am shoot for the moon and if i miss? Well i'll be among the stars

By Jonathanrmanion

It is making me feel like the t-top days are coming! kinda evil cause my camaro is a little of 7 thousand miles away and i won't get to pop out my t-tops till mid summer, but i am feeling the midway deployment blues... miss Kayleigh, miss my cars, and i wanna shoot my new guns! until then i will just day dream about home sweet home! I LOVE AND MISS YOU KAYLEIGH!!!!!!!!

Parts....

By Jonathanrmanion

Holy Cow! i been tracking down parts for my Chevelle since december trying to decided what direction i want to go with my car! for the most part it is going to be most "original/Stock style" it's getting a SS dash and gauge cluster, console, after market bucket seats that are "rally Style" i just like em cause they're comfy with the little wings that make me feel like the car is hugging me when i sit down! but i am super glad my car is a "popular" muscle car cause it wasn't hard at all to track down the parts i need, actually took longer to decide which ones i liked better! so far most of my parts will be coming from Eckler's Chevelle , and some from SS 396.com, both of which have an awesome inventory! i also think i am gunna through a functional cowl induction set up on my car -Kayleigh's Z28 has it and i love it!- don't know why, maybe i'm easily amused... but oh well i am just stir crazy right now thinking about my car, all the fun i'm gunna have and the pure satisfaction of doin 99% of it myself!

Who's Voting for Challenges? Not a lot obviously!

By Jonathanrmanion

Ok people there is some where in the range of 20,000 members to this site! all of the challenges i've seen have never topped 20 votes..... I know there has to be more than 20 active members on this site! Come on people, i know you didn't join a site just to oogle over everyone elses projects coming together! These challenges should be to help motivate everyone to fix their cars up and, cause if you lose a challenge by only 3 or 4 votes then you feel like you are competing fairly well with the other car! BUT if you lose a vote by a few hundred you know you gotta get off your butt and get to wrench cause there is obviously some improvements that need to be made! So in closing i what to see ALOT more people actively participating in the challenges, not only in challenging other cars, but voting Fairly on EVERY challenge going, not just voting for your buddies car, or voting against the top 5 at the last minute! So Let the Voting Began!

Good ole Silver!

By Jonathanrmanion

when i first saw this truck it was parked infront of the local smoke shop/ Liquor Store with a for sale sign shoved in the window. I stopped and looked, sign said it had Almost new mud tires, Speed Manual 4x4, 80,000 miles on a rebuilt 300 v6 and that it ran strong... LMFAO talk about an epic fail! I already had a 77 Ford with 300 and it is an INLINE/ Straight 6! but i called em to ask what they would take for it since it said 1,500.00 OBO, the guy came down and let me take it for a test drive and it is a STRONG 300! So i came back and told him i liked it but couldn't come up 1500 but could do cash and or a gun, well when i offered my 1952 M1 Garand for it he said he really just needed cash, so i asked how much cash and he lowed balled himself at 700 bucks and i said OK! Since i was in my Infamous blue truck - not many people can drive it, and those that can have difficulty some times cause it is converted from 3 on the tree to the floor so the shift pattern i Different than most. So Kayleigh Drove it home taking the back roads, well as she was about to cross the last paved road she took off in first and barked my Knobby tires! I was in awe and kinda pissed she got the first bark out of it! but she drove it home with out further incident and said she liked it.

Going a Little sideways.....

By Jonathanrmanion

I remember one day i was heading to town, i think to take Kayleigh to work since she hates driving on Snowy roads. Well we were heading down the drive and I hit a "Hidden" pothole in the drive and it bump steered me towards a fence pole. Well when i hit the fence pole my ass end slid around and inline with another fence pole.... effectively pinnning me in and gettin me stuck in snow! So after digging myself out and bumping into the pole i don't know how many times i finally got out Kayleigh to work, a bit late i am sure but i got her there safe and sound!

Back in the day..... makes me feel old to say that :(

By Jonathanrmanion

I remember the first time i drove this car! I had just gotten out of Juvenile detention and hadn't drove in 18 months. So needless to say i was ready to jump behind the wheel of a car i had owned for a little over a year but yet to touch! I remember my brother jumping in and me killing it a hand full of time in the driveway and just as my mom was walking up to the car with a look that said "Maybe we can try again later" my legs remembered their jobs and i got it! Tearing out of the driveway sideways and i kept it in a fishtail jamming into 2 and then third grinning ear to! Right after i got it straightened out i looked at my brother and he said something along the lines of "i was wondering about ya for a second" well i cruised all over the old dirt roads around our place and got out on someblack top and laid a little rubber. And finally i come to a stop sign and it was time to really gun it. I remember telling my brother pretty much that and he said that the V6 wasn't the punk i thought it was, i just laughed cause after all my first truck was Big block ford and this was tiny v6 chevy... no balls right? Wrong. I tached it up to around 5 grand and dumped the clutch in first jerking the wheel to the left , well it spun the tires pretty good launched forward and the ass end stayed loose, but i just stayed on it since i was going in the general direction i wanted, shifting into second set it sideways aiming me at the right ditch i got nervous stabbed the gas again and tried straightening out but i hooked too hard left, aiming me at a mailbox and a tree line i turn a little less towards the right again and gunned it as i took to the ditch. Some how i managed to go from the nose of the car going head on for the mailbox sitting on a 4x4 to my back driver side tire hitting it (Thank god the tires stuck out just a little bit) well i wasn't out of the woods yet cause it was still lacking traction... but i had got it back on the road! So i slammed hard on the brakes and cranked the wheel all the way to the right trying to just swing my ass end around and point the car back towards the house. Well i gunned it a little to soon and just did a donut, but i came back around and i let off enough to start heading in the right direction! This all transpired in a few seconds but it felt like minutes. So i raced home, stopping short of the house and pulled my car in the silo field. When i walked into the house mom asked where my car was. After i told her where it was and why she just laughed and said " You haven't been home an hour and already breaking the law!
