Pontiac Spring Nationals - May 10
Mon May 12, 2008
Jim Wangers, the "Godfather of the GTO" and I flew into Tulsa (while Robert Johnson towed in the GeeTO Tiger) for the 1st Annual Pontiac Spring Nationals hosted by the Indian Nationals POCI Club at Tulsa Raceway Park.
The event actually started with a Friday night presentation by Jim Wangers at the host hotel complete with food, drink and a raffle. Wangers' presentation was on his Royal Pontiac racing experiences--putting together the deal with Ace Wilson of Royal Pontiac and then racing those Hot Chief Royal Pontiacs from '59 thru '63. He then wrapped up the presentation with his remembrances of the original GeeTO Tiger show he created back in 1965.
On Saturday I was in the driver's seat of the GeeTO Tiger for our "Beat the Tiger" program at TRP where three racers where selected to compete against the GeeTO Tiger for bragging rights. The Tiger ran a best of 10.84 at 123 mph and I went 3-0 in the "Beat the Tiger" races. I even had a perfect light with a .000 reaction time.
A great time was had by all and we concluded the day out to dinner with several of the club members in downtown Tulsa.
On Sunday before we flew home, club member Tim Dye shared with Jim and I his phenomenal collection of Pontiac memorabilia as well as his collection of Pontiac and Oakland cars...truly impressive.
Heres to the club for their GR-RRReat efforts in putting together such a fine event.
