The King Kolbra and my story

Blog post photo

Back in 2003 my Father-n-law, Charley Harris (career corprate pilot) bought a Cessna 150 and asked me to take him to pick her up. After the ferry flight to KPIB he asked me, "Hey wanna go up?" So I said "yes I would love to". The rest is history I was hooked on flying big time! I started flying lessons and racked up 36 hrs with a CFII before he sold the 150 which my brother-n-law Nathan soloed in as well. That is four nine five eight papa in the photo. Then I decided to buy a kitplane and build it in our 5000 sq ft shop. After 8 months of research and a trip to sun-n-fun it came down to the Kolb or a Rans S-7. I picked the Kolb and flew to London KY to tour the factory and take a demo flight. I had my heart set on the Kolb Mark 3 X-tra and that what I flew that day but before we left the then Mgr of TNK (The new kolb aircraft company) asked us "Have you seen the Kolbra?". Well one sit down in the airplane and we were sold! So I ordered kit 1 which is the wings and tail section and started building. That was sept 2003 and I have spent 1300 hrs on Ms. Dixie to date. I am going to close this entry and play with this site and learn it and will load a complete history on the airplane along with our other 3 airplanes in days to come which include a RV8, a 1/2 scale WAR P47 razzor back and a 1942 Interstate S-1 Cadet.

Thanks for the warm welcome

Regards

Paul Petty

Accidents banished from Highway Code

Blog post photo

An article in the Times of May 12th 2007 observed that the word "accident" has been removed from the latest edition of the Highway Code and replaced by "collision", "crash" or "incident".

The reason appears to be that describing something as an "accident" the driver feels less responsible as they are considered unavoidable, while using these alternative words encourages drivers to see the incident as a fact for which someone is responsible.

Some motoring groups have, however, claimed that the change will "foster a blame culture and encourage the prosecution of drivers for casualties that they had no intention of causing."

Some police forces refer to RTCs (road traffic collisions) rather than the more common RTA (road traffic accident.)

* Do you agree that the choice of vocabulary in this case reflects the way we view road traffic incidents?

* Is there a neutral term we can use?

* What other examples can you find of terminology which colours a listener's attitude towards an idea, a thing or an event? Consider the difference between "freedom fighters" and "terrorists" or "chubby" and "obese". Is this the same as political correctness (crippled / handicapped / disabled), (black / negro / colored), (chairman / chair / chairperson)?

only in Iowa...

Blog post photo

So, I travel to Formula 1 each year, from Lincoln NE to Indianapolis, IN. A 10 hour venture that entails a 300 mile trek across Iowa. If you are ever looking for a four hour mind-numbing experience, just take a trip along I-80 though Iowa, you will get your every wish. It has to be the most boring scenery and extensive monotony one can endure.

Iowa is not without its moments though, oh no. As I am travelling back to Nebraska, I am making my way though Des Moines making sure not to take any wrong turns. (I made that mistake two years ago, extending my stay at least 30 mins before getting back on track.) So, as I'm leaving Des Moines, I need to make a gas station stop. I find a gas station exit on the west end of town and pull off I-80 onto a six-lane divided street. However, I am unable to find a gas station nearby, so I end up travelling about a mile down the road before I find a Kum-and-Go gas station. On the left side of the road are a bunch of blockades and people with flashlights signaling cars not to enter. I'm not exactly sure what is going on, but the gas station is off to the right so no worries for me.

So here I am, 10:30 PM on July 2nd in Des Moines Iowa pumping fuel into my car. And you won't believe what begins to happen next. A fireworks display across the street begins to go off, maybe 60 yards from where I stood. And this isn't some backyard display either, it is a major event display with some high-dollar mortar shells. Almost immediately, pieces of mortar shell start falling all around me, sounding like plastic beads bouncing off the pavement. Is this happening? What if a burning ember comes down? What if a mortar shell doesn't reach its altitude, and sprays sparks into the fumes coming from my gas pump? I wasn't interested in finding out. I stopped pumping and got away from that station as soon as I could, in fear for my life. What also surprised me was the other people pumping gas. They had no worries, they just stood by their cars and watched the pretty fireworks.

All kinds of things came to mind. How could they get a permit to put a display right next to such a busy street, let alone a gas station? Only in Iowa, was my only guess.

Help - I am drowning in car shows - LOL!!!

Hi All,
I am "Happy" to report that it was another successful weekend here in sunny South Florida with beautiful weather, a great car cruise and two fantastic car shows.
Friday evening started it all off with the usual cruise-in at the Tower Shops in Davie, followed by a bite to eat with a few of the guys at the Falcon Pub.
Saturday morning I was up early to head on over to the S.A.B.A. Car Show on Andrews Avenue in Ft. Lauderdale. S.A.B.A. stands for the South Andrews Business Association and they put on a great show from 9:00 until 4:00 with 142 cars and trucks attending.
Saturday evening was dinner out at Stevie B's in Weston - an awesome place for ribs!!!
Sunday I was up early once again and headed over to the BIG show. The last real car show of the year, and the biggest. I was out of the house at 6:15 and headed over to meet up with a few buddies to drive on over to the show. It is held at the Festival Marketplace Mall in Pompano Beach and was attended by 610 cars and trucks. I was joined by 12 other members of the Got Muscle? Car Club along with my girl Tina from MFI. The day was awesome, although a little tiring, what with all the walking around...
I wrapped up Sunday at a small cruise-in at a Bar & Grille by the name of Zo's and was finally home and in bed at 11:30...
God I hope this week goes slow enough to get caught up at the office, yet quick enough to get to the weekend...

Challenges - Waste of Time or ?

Filtered Content: This photo may not be appropriate for work.

Hello all...
I am concerned about some of the groups on this site making challenges a total waste of time. Their members select cars to challenge and then all of the members of the club are instructed to vote for the club member's car, even if the car that's been challenged is far superior to some of their rust buckets. This is not why this site was setup. I, along with many others, shouldn't have to tolerate this type of behavior.
I would be interested in hearing from everyone else on this subject...

A few of you have been writing to me and I want you to know I really appreciate your prayers and concerns. Life has been so tuff on me the last few months. Last year at this time my sister in law (my dear dear friend, sissy) was just recovering from a coma from a car accident. Seems like Dec, Jan, Feb are my challanging months.
Dad is paralized on one side now his cancer has twisted into the vertebrea of his neck. Of course it is everywhere in every organ as it is. I don't think and I kind of hope because I watch the pain that it will not drag on another few months.
I have been back and forth got opinions in Colorado and back here at Cleveland Cllinic I have still not decided on what to do with my health issue. I'm very scared it will be my 7th surgery on my back since I was 17. MRSA is very high in the hospitals, my chances of paralization are getting higher, and I have a lot of scare tissue as it is and very very low immune system from the other physical challanges I have. I will be making a decision in the next few weeks. It depends on my father also. But I cannot hardly stand the pain f breathing any longer it hurts way too much and the pounds are dropping.
I love the fact you know nme already as just Susie the girl with the red corvette. I was once told many years ago, do you want to be known as the girl with handicaps or Susie the you, you see. I said I have no handicaps. The Dr. may say different and people too, but noit to me I can do anything I put my mind to it. (always have been a dare=devil/) LOL
I hope you enjoy my photo of my sissy (sister) and I.
Hugs to All!!!
Susie

Valentines Day

Filed under: 1962 Corvette Chevy (My Red Dream comes true!)

Blog post photo

A quick note to all my friends here on Motortopia. I really enjoy reading your letters whether they come directly to my email or through the motortopia site. I would like to say. "Happy Valentines Day to all of you and know that I thought of my friends here today" I'm on my way to spend the day with my mom and dad yesterday ws a very poor day with both, mom is losing weight with worry and shaking more with parkensons due to the emotional toll it is taking on her. Dad is awake approximately 45 minutes to an hour now only ..during the day. He has quit eating he may take some applesauce with his 33 pills but he won't eat anymore his eyes are lifeless. Thank you to all who have listened or read my letters, its been my release from the reality of lfe here.

I hope you enjoy this photo as much as I do. It was taken at Christmas it is my dad and my little boy..(my little son is 6'3" 200 pounds and he works out all the time runs always, very sports-minded and is a honor roll student or a Deans list student at times in Industrial management with chemical degree background, he will be 27 soon) . He will graduate in June of 2009 , yes he like others goofed off a bit in the beginning. Has quite the resume now with ~ helping the cancer fight raising money through student teaching at the college he attends. So anyone looking in their business in the future please let me know he is looking were the money and insurance will take him and thats his goal.
*My father has lost about 55 -65 pounds since that photo. And doesn't even look like the same man. He is very proud of his grandson it's great to see the success your children have accomplished and I am pleased that dad has seen my son in his full element of happiness towards a wonderful future with lots of loans to pay back...(lol) He is not too proud to start at the lower end of a job and learn more he speaks that you can never learn enough.
Hugs to all
Susie

McCain Quits. Romney will Be President. Rambler to become Official U.S. Car.

Blog post photo

Today, John McCain announced that he would quit the presidential race and move to the Green Zone and become the Admiral of Iraq.

Replacing McCain will be Mitt Romney, who was running a very strenuous campaign until he quit in favor of McCain earlier this year.

It is reported that Romney, who now drives a Gremlin - retooled with a Hydrogen Fuel Cell, will announce that the Rambler will become the official car of the United States and that production on reproductions will start immediately.

Romeny is confident of victory. He has received the endorsement of the RSL AMC (Retired and Still Living American Motor Company employees) now based in Boca Raton, FL.

P.S. George Romney, Mitt's Father, was President of AMC (American Motor Company) which produced the Rambler, followed by the initial success of the Gremlin. The Gremlin was introduced on April 1, 1970. John McCain's father and grandfather were both admirals.

Today is April Fools Day. !!!! :-)

First, check out the photos of our popcorn machine it is cool.
We had a great day tuesday. Drove all the cars including the cad, El Camino, Firebird, Dam Truck, 56 chevy truck. Got two tires repaired. Cleaned up the driveway and cleaned up many leaves.
After that we went Christmas shopping. We bought lots of stuff but we found a very cool popcorn machine and bought two (one for us). Got home put popcorn machine together and made popcorn. It has a heating light, stirring motor, and electric cooking pot. I really like the machine.
Today is more Christmas shopping (we are giving a lot of gift certificates this year so not as much shopping as usual.
Take care,
Jerry
