Cool Ride of the Week (Nov 19th, 2009)

By JerryandMary

This week we only had to look at a little over 50 garages to find ten from which to choose the "Cool Ride of the Week" from. Both Monte_Momma and her 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo (Alizé) seemed to stick out (although all ten were great rides). Monte_Momma has a very cool garage that can be seen here: http://www.mo...v/4924/i/aliz

Congratulations Monte_Momma on having your 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo (Alizé) chosen as the "Cool Ride of the Week" for Nov 19th, 2009).

Take care,
Jerry

Mystery Car of the Day (Nov 18th, 2009)

By JerryandMary

Can you find the year, make, model, and owner? Quote from the owner "My car was once used to drag race in and around the Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada area. I bought it in 1998 without a transmission, interior and motor out of the Autotrader Magazine. The car became a lengthly and expensive three year project of many trials and tribulations.

Originally I bought a rebuilt 396 (375 hp) engine which developed cam shaft issues three years after the car was completed. After carefully researching whether to rebuild or buy new, I decided to purchase a GM Crate Motor."

Good luck,
Jerry

Lunokhod - It sorta looks like what it sounds like.

By GoldyLocks

When you look up at the moon tonight - (ya, we know, Motortopians are the type who stare at the moon each night and receipt muscle-car poetry) you can think about how the first lunar vehicle started roaming around on the moon way back on November 17, 1970.

The mission was the Luna 17 and it was a mission of the Soviet Union. Sure, the USA first set foot on the big piece of cheese in the sky, but the Soviets were the first to cruise around with their own RC-controlled vehicle.

Top speed was about one football field an hour. But the battery lasted five times longer than expected.

And, comment on this post if you can think how many they had in the pit crew when this thing was roaming about the moon.

One Last Look at C.A.R.S

By GoldenGirl

Love it or hate it, the C.A.R.S program is dwindling to a final close as the government finishes processing the outstanding transactions.

By October 16th, 677,081 “clunkers” had been traded in for new vehicles. The Associated Press recently used the Freedom of Information Act to get the complete stats from the program made public. You can read the details for yourself at http://www.cars.gov/ but some of the more interesting highlights are shared here.

First of all the top ten vehicles traded in were:

1. Ford Explorer 4WD
2. Ford F150 Pickup 2WD
3. Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD
4. Ford Explorer 2WD
5. Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan 2WD
6. Jeep Cherokee 4WD
7. Chevrolet Blazer 4WD
8. Ford F150 Pickup 4WD
9. Chevrolet C1500 Pickup 2WD
10. Ford Windstar FWD Van

The participants then purchased 397,182 cars and 279,899 trucks. Remembering that the goal of Cash for Clunkers, as the program was commonly known, was to put more fuel efficient vehicles on the road, note these additional interesting facts.

Pickup truck owners who traded in a truck in most cases purchased another, some only gaining one more mile per gallon in efficiency. Ford, Chevy and Dodge pickup truck owners most often purchased F150s, Silverados and Ram trucks as their new vehicle. In fact, in 32 transactions, truck owners traded older pickups for new large trucks like GMC Sierras and Toyota Tundras that are rated at 14 mpg.

A little over half a million dollars of government rebates purchased cars that got the same or worse gas mileage than the traded-in clunker. In a few cases, the owners of large pickups traded for Hummer H3s. It’s reported that the government is checking out those transactions.

The outcome wasn’t all bad. The top ten vehicles purchased were:

1. Toyota Corolla
2. Honda Civic
3. Toyota Camry
4. Ford Focus FWD
5. Hyundai Elantra
6. Nissan Versa
7. Toyota Prius
8. Honda Accord
9. Honda Fit
10. Ford Escape FWD

Lots of gas saving cars on that list, but that’s not a surprise.

In reviewing the list of all cars traded in, however, there are some unexpected vehicles. What about these:

1987 Excalibur Phaeton
Hundreds of Firebirds Trans Ams/Formulas and Camaros
1980 Austin Rover Sterling
1989 Laforza
1995 Alfa Romeo Truck
2006 F150 Roush Stage 3 SuperCab
93 Corvettes from 1984 to 1995 plus 30 convertible Vettes from 1986 to 1989
5 Maseratis

Never even heard of some of those, and of course the thought of losing those Firebirds, Camaros and Vettes is hard.

If you weren’t able to take advantage of the C.A.R.S program, you can still look for great rebates and deals at the NADA website. Rebates for all manufacturers and all regions are searchable at this link:
http://www.na...scounts.html.

If you did get a great Cash for Clunkers deal, post a comment and share your story. Other comments welcome as always.

This week we looked at over eighty garages to find ten from which to choose the "Cool Ride of the Week" from. Terry takes part in just about every aspect of Motortopia and has a great garage with many interesting photos. If you have time see his garage, look here: http://www.mo...125/i/blkbuty
