Chysler Sebring Convertible: Worst Car in the World?

By corsa

Blog post photo

If you follow Jeremy Clarkson, you know he isn't a big fan of American cars. Oh, sure, he loves the Corvette ZR1 (except for the poor build quality on the recent example he sampled) but most American cars fall victim to his witty prose.

In his latest column for the Times, Jezzy writes about the Chrysler Sebring Convertible he rented on his recent trip to the U.S. And he declares it to be the worst car in the world.

Jezzy figures he has the answer as to why this is: Americans have no sense of history. He figures that since we are such a new country, we have no concept of "the past," and therefore we have no concept of "the future" and don't build things to last.

Okay, so I have to agree the Sebring is truly a horrible car. But is Clarkson way off the mark on his observations about American cars (and America) in general?

Check out his review of the Sebring, then let us know what you think!

Intermeccanica Fitch Corvair Phoenix

By canadianpontiacguy

Blog post photo

On Saturday, Oct. 4, I put up info about the Intermeccanica Italia.

http://www.mo...canica_italia

Here is some info about a Corvair concept car Intermeccanica created for John Fitch in 1966.
The memo was written by automotive writer David E Davis Jr., to his boss Steve Smith.

"So, Semantic Man, I've caught you at last! You were wrong about the Fitch Phoenix. It is not a dumb car not by any standard of measurement. It's a helluva nice car, in fact, and I think old John Fitch is going to sell a bunch of them. He and I drove it all over those keen little roads around Lime Rock, and I had a blast. I don't know if Fitch had as much fun as I did, but at least he didn't try to bail out or anything--not even when I busted the clutch cable about twenty miles out in the deepest boondocks and had to nurse the little dear all the way home clutchlessly, if not altogether graunchlessly. All that jazz you were trying to lay on me about "no Corvair is worth $8700" is hogwash. This car is no more a Corvair than the Porsche Speedster was a Volkswagen. It uses the basic Corvair engine and drive train, and a lot of other bits, I suppose, but it's an entirely different sort of a car. And it's worth the money."

Can you add any info about this unique Corvair?

Intermeccanica Italia

By canadianpontiacguy

Blog post photo

The Intermeccanica Italia Spyder is a rare example of a period when Italian specialist builders frequently used American V-8's because manufacturers like Ferrari and Maserati weren't keen on selling their exotic engines to potential rivals. In addition, the big eights were powerful, reliable, and relatively simple to maintain.
Carrozzeria Intermeccanica was established by Frank Reisner, who was born in Hungary, raised in Canada, raced sports cars and specials, then moved to Italy. His company built a number of one-off and limited-production sports cars, including the Apollo GT, which was based on Buick mechanicals.

In 1967 he unveiled the Italia, the preferred engine being a Ford 351 cubic inch Cleveland V-8 mated to a 4-speed manual. A mere 376 Italia coupes and Spyders were built, The gorgeously-styled spyder far outsold its coupe counterpart and became the best selling of all the Intermeccanica models. It had styling cues from the Ferrari 365 2+2 and maybe the 250 GT Nembo Spyder.

The red 1969 Italia with black leather interior has a black leather convertible top and is in very original condition. It is powered by a Ford 302 engine and a Ford 4-speed manual transmission. Equipment consists of electric windows, power brakes, leather rimmed steering wheel, chrome tail pipes, padded instrument panel and much more, and is offered for sale at $59,900.
