Man builds 80 MPG, 400 HP '87 Mustang

Mad that Ford isn't bringing over the new Ford Fiesta that gets 62.5 MPG? Who cares when you can have one of these!
Doug Pelmear has built a 1987 Ford Mustang LX Coupe that gets a claimed 80 miles per gallon. Oh, and by the way, it also happens to make 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque.
He built the car to compete in the $10 million Automotive X Prize competition, which is a contest to create the first affordable and marketable 100 MPG vehicle.
So what's the secret? Doug isn't giving any details yet, as his patents are currently pending. But he has said that it is basically still a rod-and-piston engine, but with a bunch more electronics on it. He also redesigned some things on the engine block.
Traditional engines operate at about 8 to 10 percent efficiency, but Doug says his engine is at about 38 percent efficiency. And it would get even better mileage if he ran it on straight gasoline instead of the E85 he is running it on now. He also said he could get more mileage out of it if he scaled back the horsepower a bit.
This sure as heck beats a Prius!

- My hat is off to Doug. Always remember many great inventions came from some guys garage, or basement. Necessity is truly the mother of invention. Doug if you ever read this I wish you the very best of luck and hope you win the prize.
