Question of the Day: What's the best car movie ever?
Jul 3, 2008 | Views: 1,245
We love cars, and we love movies. So what can be better combining the two? Whether it is a movie where the car is the star, a movie about racing, a movie that features an incredible chase scene, or just a movie full of car "eye candy", there are tons of movies that fit the bill.
When I was a kid, some of the car movies that made an impression on me included Smokey and the Bandit and The Cannonball Run. As I got into college, movies like Tucker: A Man and His Dream and Days of Thunder stood out. More recent car movies have included Gone in 60 Seconds (the remake obviously) and Pixar's Cars.
But when asked to choose my favorite, it comes down to two older movies: Le Mans and Grand Prix. Which is my favorite kind of depends on the day, but I think this weekend, I'll dust off my Le Mans DVD and pretend I'm Steve McQueen.
How about you? What is your favorite car movie of all time? Let us know in the comments!

- Good news, all fans of "Cars"! I just heard from my niece last night that Disney/Pixar has a "Cars" sequel in the works! This time, Lightning McQueen and Mater go to Europe... I can't wait! (I can just see Lightning running at LeMans. He'd have to get headlights that were more than just stickers, though.)

- Yeah that's a toughy to pick one of all time.
I liked them all at one time or another.
Speedway was a favorite for years and The Fireball 500 and Thunder Alley with that awesome 1967 Custom Thundercharger!
Many years later Then Cannonball Run was a favorite for the different cars and comedy and yes the Girls!
The wife liked the Fast & Furious movies.
Cars was a beautiful animated Movie and hope there is a sequel in some point and time.
Since I like a bit of comedy in movies and not so much on the serious side,
Smokey and the Bandit 1 I think is still my number 1 favorite though. Jackie Gleason was just Perfect with those famous one liners! Still gets me to LMAO after all these years!

- Thunder Road! Also, Heart Like A Wheel, Speedway (Elvis!), and of course Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Oh wait, Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry.

- Cool Topic Corsa, Hmmm.. alot of great Car Movies
out there, narrowing it down to just One is a difficult
task for sure , Hmmm... For me ,theres one that
has stuck to the back of my mind for sometime.
It's a Car Movie about Time and Distance. Something
that I still see to this Day, with a host of spin off shows
that are all about time and distance for example
BULLRUN and I could name more but that is good
enough example. My Pick would be Vanishing Point......

- To me, without the best car movie was the ORIGINAL "Gone In 60 Seconds". Toby Halicki wrote, directed, starred in, and produced it on a shoestring budget, something like $400,000. Several of the cameo appearances in the film were done for free by personal friends of his - Parnelli Jones and J.C.Agajanian, for instance. The famous part of the ultimate chase, where "Eleanor" takes out the freeway light pole was really an accident! Halicki actually hit a car not associated with the movie and spun into the pole, knocking it over. Halicki kept his cool and sped away!
A couple of movies that haven't been mentioned yet that really should have been: "The Love Bug", and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". Two favorites from my childhood.

- How about Thunder Road with Robert Mitchum? No, I'm not that old, which is what makes it such a great movie with all those old cars racing around.
