Question of the Day: Which GM brand(s) would you cut?

By corsa

GM has announced another round of layoffs will be coming soon, and earlier this week the Wall Street Journal said that the General is looking to kill or sell off one or more of its brands as it tries to stay afloat.

From the sounds of things, HUMMER is pretty much a given to be killed or sold off, and Chevrolet and Cadillac can breathe easily, they aren't going anywhere. But all other brands are said to be under a microscope right now.

Here are some of my thoughts:

Saturn: Saturn hasn't really turned out to be the import fighter GM expected it to, despite the fact that they now have some pretty good cars in the Aura and Astra (which are rebadged Opels.) However, I think despite the good cars, the brand isn't that strong. When people start looking at Honda and Toyota and VW for their next car, few people I know would also say "hey, let's check out Saturn too!" It just seems the brand has a certain stigma, it just isn't "hip." Also, I heard that Saturn has yet to turn a profit since they started. I'm not sure if that's true, but if it is, I think that would be a strong case to kill this brand. If I were in charge, I will kill the Saturn brand, keep cars like the Astra and Aura badged as Opels under their original name, bring over the Opel Corsa as well as the "OPC" versions of all these models, and change all the Saturn dealerships over to Opel dealerships. I think the brand "Saturn" just has a negative image with younger people, and with "Opel" they could work to build a younger, hipper brand image.

Saab: I like Saabs. I don't know if I'd ever own one, because there are other alternatives out there that I prefer (Audi, BMW), but I still like them. Unfortunately, Saab only sold about 35,000 cars last year, and since GM purchased Saab, they seemed to have lost their soul. Saabs were always quirky, and had a cult following. I don't think Saab should be killed, but I think GM should sell off Saab to someone who "gets" what Saab is all about.

GMC: There are some signs that already point to GMC being on the chopping block: development on the next version of the Acadia have been canceled, and Chevy was just given their own version of the SUV. GMC offers nothing unique, and has a fully redundant model lineup. Chevy could fully handle GM's truck segment.

Buick: I'm not a fan of any of the current Buick models, but I think GM will keep Buick around to cater to the older buyers, since Cadillac is kind of moving more toward BMW and Mercedes territory, trying to attract younger, hipper buyers. So they still need Buick to cater to the older crowd.

Pontiac: Rumors have been running for the past couple of years that Pontiac was going to get the axe. Personally, I don't see it. To me, Pontiac offers some unique models that the others don't (a rear-wheel-drive sports sedan in the G8, the new G8 Sport Truck, a sports car that isn't a Corvette (the Solstice), and I think Pontiac has a legitimate reason to stay around. But, if you believe the rumors, Pontiac is one of the divisions closest to getting the axe. But I would say keep Pontiac around.

So there you have it, those are some of my thoughts. What are your thoughts? What division should go the way of Oldsmobile and why? Or, do you think GM needs to keep all their current divisions?

I think they will surely sell off the Hummer brand and axing GMC suv's and full sized versions of what Chevy also makes would be a good idea to stop. Maybe keep GMC around for just making the Big Rigs and heavy Equipment only vehicles.

There Buick brand is not making Grand Nationals or GNX's anymore and to me that was the only car of there's that they made that ever impressed me or even looked good,Otherwise it was a meme's car.
I haven't seen one on a car lot I'd buy
Actually I see them going bye bye!

Saabs would be another I would sell off, I don't know they just seemed overpriced and still kind of fugly.

As for Pontiac,
Getting rid of Pontiac probably wouldn't be such a good idea and if Saturn went to we would not have a Soltice/Sky or G8 unless they stop importing G8's from Australia altogether.
But not sure of how either one are selling now.
Thats all I think about now when I see the name Pontiac.
It use to be a cool car company with Trans Am Firebirds, Can Am's, 2 door Grand Prix's, GTO's,(American Made) Phoenix and the later model fastback Fiero's,Now there kind of ho-hum models besides the little sports car Solstice.
Now we have Pontiac Toyota Vibes and SUV's we don't need.
We didn't need SUV's for a everyday driver in the 60's or 70's and we don't need them now!

Opel,Yeah It gives me a bad feeling just reading that name.

GM needs to sell them all except Chevrolet,Pontiac and Cadillac and Buy Subaru!
See the U.S.A. in an AWD WRX SSTi Chevrolet!!!! hehee! wink image

Man I could go on and on about this subject. My thoughts quickly though...

GMC = gone
Saab = gone
HUMMER = gone, unless they can come up with a viable option to the Classic Jeep TJ or whatever they call it now.
Saturn = Scion competitor
Pontiac = Performance cars, move the Camaro over here as the new Firebird
Buick = Luxo cars for Grandma and Grandpa
Caddilac = gone besides the CTS and CTS-V which move to Pontiac because let's face it thats the only car that's not just an overpriced Buick

We Dont need Duplicate cars or Trucks so I agree to get rid of GMC , Saturn needs to go same Route as GEO and keep best cars and call them Chevys or Pontiacs.SAABs are great cars and need to be Marketed better.

I agreed with most, but sell off Hummer and Saab!!

Kill off GMC, I mean we no loner need duplicate models like yesteryear and also kill off Buick, it's of the past as Oldsmobile was..

I think Saturn could help turn things around if Marketing is done right with fuel efficiency but merging Pontiac isn't a bad idea, just cut down on some models..

Cadillac has been a trade name for decades, would be a same to stop it now.

Always keep Chevrolet as the primiary model of GM, do what it takes to keep it the front runner!!!

1) I agree about GMC and HUMMER. They are unnecessary. Kill GMC and sell off HUMMER.

2) Merge Pontiac and Saturn under the Pontiac name, and try to project an upscale image (sort of like Acura is to Honda) for the Opel-built cars. (To many, the Opel name has bad connotations from their foray into the American market in the 60's and 70's)

3) Combine Cadillac and Saab agencies under one roof (like Lincoln-Mercury, or Chrysler-Plymouth), but let them keep their own names and brand identity.

4) Ditto the above with Chevrolet/Chevy Truck/Buick.
