Found On the Road Dead or Get The Tools Out - A Lighter Look at Challenges

By GoldenGirl

In high school we cruised in my boyfriend’s ’71 Charger R/T. We’d start at the shopping center, then go by the 7/11. If no one was around we’d cruise to the neighboring town’s strip mall…finally heading back to our shopping center looking for another muscle car.

By 8:00 or 9:00 p.m., a few rows of ‘60s and ‘70s muscle cars would be parked in the parking lot across from Taco Bell. There was talk about Mopar versus Chevy or big block versus small block. Sometimes claims were made that other people challenged and happily we hadn’t seen “reality” shows where people vote for favorites instead of getting to prove who’s best!

Back then a challenge required a late night trip to a straight stretch on a deserted two lane where a claim could be tested. The Charger either whipped the Camaro in the quarter mile or it didn’t.

You could say the carb was messing up or any other excuse but the bottom line was, unless you crossed the faded white strip first, he was faster than you. No denying reality.

Having all our Mopar brothers vote for us on the two lane wouldn’t have made the Charger win on a night when the Camaro was faster. And we wouldn’t have challenged a Datsun 240z. Why leave the Taco Bell parking lot for that?

Yeah, some teasing would happen. You’d hear, “is it time to Get the Tools Out?” or “what are you doing tonight? oh, right, you’ve got to Fix Or Repair Daily.” Not fun but, hey, it’s the risk you take when accepting a challenge.

We took the challenge because we love cars. Blue oval or bow tie, we admire the effort that goes into their ride and understand the passion. In fact, it didn’t matter if you drove a Ford, Chevy or a Dodge…oddly enough, there were nights that small block Camaro actually beat us. (But you know a six-pack is hard to tune, right?)

Now Motortopia is our virtual parking lot, our virtual two lane. Sadly virtual, not real.

We still participate in challenges because we love to put two cars side by side, compare their specs and stories, and vote for who we think is best, not for our best friend. Almost as much fun as back in the day and less chance of losing your driver’s license.

But we’re not participating in a challenge with a dually diesel pickup against a Nissan 350z. Sometimes we might vote for a Mopar over a Ford but only if they’re really close.

So what about you? You’re on this site because you love cars. The challenges aren’t real but they’re an awesome opportunity to see great cars that people like you are proud to share. Do you want to enjoy checking out other people’s passion or do you want to play American Idol?

Challenges can be fun or mean. I have discontinued my participation because some people take them too seriously. It didn't take long to realize it wasn't about the car, but about how many friends you have that you can get to vote. If requests for "vote for me" were banned and it somehow miraculously became about the car, I would participate again. I still think it should be a vote for one contest, this one or that one period, no style, performance breakdowns.

Ive been in my share of Races on the weekends ,won some lost more , But you cant even compare that to this , All you have here is Pictures of cars and trucks to go by . Ive said before its not about the car or truck on this site its about the Friendships Made . I care more about Friends I have made on this site than the cars and I love to look and read about peoples cars , The challenge feature on here ,to me is meaningless . Its something to look at and play with when your on site and things get slow. If ya get your friends together and join a group and go against other groups its Fun to see if you can get more of your friends to vote than the other person . If I come upon a challenge where Im not familur with either car I usually go with car I like best not the one that would win a DRAG RACE .Face it if ya dont like the Feature ,Dont play , Or get MOTORTHOPIA to Remove it .Bottom Line Is If I cant walk up to cars and Raise Hood and talk to owner Face to Face Im voteing for the person who talks to me and Ive become friends with on site . I may have Ticked off alot of people on site and Im sorry . So I hope I still have my Friends on here at Least.

Sure, I participate in plenty of Challenges - I enjoy competition as much as the next person, but my challenges are grounded in reality. I don't challenge "Dually Pickups" with either my '66 Corvair or my '06 Cobalt SS. That isn't real. I challenge comparable cars, or at least cars that are somewhat comparable. It's kinda hard to find something that compares straight up with a 42-year-old air cooled, rear engined sport compact, so I challenge other old cars, more modern compacts, and pony cars with it. With the Cobalt, I go after compacts, sport compacts, and pony cars (Hey, it's an SS!) In fact, I have chalenged a few other Chevy SS's, just on the nameplate. I have gone for challenges with cars that some think are completely out of my league, but only if I thought my car had the merit to put up a decent showing. My Corvair is modified to Yenko Stinger specs (It's NOT a real Stinger, and I make that point clear!), so I do challenge other "Tuner"-type cars: Roush, Shelby, BMW M-series, etc. Apparently other people appreciate the history of the Yenko name, since I've been successful in several of these challenges.

One of my favorite cars to challenge is the Mustang. According to Lee Iacocca's autobiography, the Mustang was inspired by the Corvair Monza... Seems the Monza was eating the Falcon Futura's lunch in sales, and he wanted a sporty compact to go up against it. He gave Ford Design a rush order to draw up a sporty body to bolt onto the Falcon's chassis, and the Mustang was born. So you see, without the Corvair, there might never have been a Mustang, and by extension, no Camaros, Firebirds, Barracudas, Challengers, Cougars, or Javelins either! Yeah, I challenge those guys, too.

Hmm, about cruising. Mary and I would pull into the A&W Root beer parking lot in my 1960 Ford Star liner. I had pink fuzzy's around the rear view mirror, the sun visors, and where ever else they would fit. I had all my dash bulbs tinted red (looked pink) and lights under the front fenders also tinted red. The 4 track was turned up loud and I had a speaker in my front grill. No poodle skirt but a very short black skirt that had an extra roll in the waist band for Mary and a pair of levis with white shirt and red vest for me. We had a Craig blue light 45 RPM non skip record player but we could not put a record on until we stopped because of course, it skipped. We cruise through slowly to see who is hanging there. We spot some friends and pull in next to them. We only stay for a while as everyone is going to the Witches stand after that and we want to get a good parking spot. That is the way it was.

Honestly the only things I dislike about the challenges are all the unhappy people that they create. I would like it better if the most a person could win by was one trophy or something like that. You know if no one could tell by how much a person won by only that they had one more vote then the other car it would be better. Of course the challenges are not going to be fair and yes if my friends car was at the A&W around 1964 and someone was comparing rides I would likely favor my friends car. Yes he would likely add a bit of drama to his last race or the one before that but that is because he is human.
