Ethanol VS Methanol

By Gknows

Does anyone know the diff between the two. I googled the topic but the answers I found were not clear. Methanol acts as a chemical intercooler does ethanol have the same properties? I want to build an engine to run on e85 but not sure what size carb I would need. If anyone has any info please send it to me.

Methanol is a cooling agent and offers about a 25% horsepower increase over gasoline, but it is corrosive and you use twice as much.
Ethanol is basicly oxygenated gasoline, has about the same characteristics as gasoline, is more readily available than methanol. Generally your carb size (cfm) would be about the same on E85 as it would be on gasoline only your jets need to be about 4 steps richer.
Methanol: Suitable as a racing fuel only. Not practical for street use. A little bit higher compression needed over gas.
E85: Corrosive somewhat, more environment friendly, cheaper than gasoline, works well with lower compression engines, cheaper than gasoline. Runs slightly cooler than gas, but not really considered a cooling agent. Works best with fuel injection.

I guess your choice of fuel would be dependant upon what you are doing, compression ratio and size and type of induction being used.
