I got this 88 Monte SS project I'm working on that I call Hoodoo. I'm really attached to my 305 cause its never let me down but my brothers and EVERYBODY screams swtich to a 350. To me, thaking out the 305 is like my car having a different soul really. In contrast-before I put on 3' x-pipes, flow masters and headers, I beat the **** out of this dude running a 455 Trans Am and all I had on me was a 600 carb put on then.
But then again - dude didn't know his car and was scared of it I think.

Basically, is there really a BIG difference beside 20hp between the 305 and 350 and would it be stupid to add on power to a 305 thinking I could max say 3-400 hp out of it.

Unless your really going to race it a lot. More Cubic Inches and Horse power is usually the way to go and then build that up. But if you like your 305 and it's not giving you any trouble and runs good. I would stick with the 305 until it needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

I didn't have a choice as mine had already been replaced and the owner doesn't know where the stock 305 went.
I was looking for one that was mostly stock to restore to original condition.
There rare to find unmolested with a stock engine and matching numbers!
Tough call, But go with your heart not what others say you should have! You have to be happy with it! Not them!

Have a Good one!
Nice Pics btw!

If you do decide to go with a bigger more HP motor. Keep the old 305 and all it's original parts! If someone wants to restore one all the parts are there and will bring better money!

Hey Rivs, I had a '92 Camaro that had a 305/4L60 in it. As far as I was concerned, it was perfect for what I needed. I did however, change the engine to a 350 only because the 305 finally gave up. The car had 113,000 miles on it and the only thing I had to do to it was replace the alternator. In my OPINION, I would leave it alone. There is no good reason to replace a perfectly good engine just because someone else thinks you should have more HP. If the car is running fine with no problems, I would not change a thing. It will more than likely give you better gas mileage than a souped up 350. Now hear this, This is just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions, it is like an a** h***, everyone has one.

Hmm The 350 has so many parts available. I do not really think you would use 400 horses if you had them. It would require serious suspension modifications to really use it. I think you are safe staying with the 305 and getting everything you need out of it. Some of what I say is just guessing as perhaps you want to race the ride but I think not.
