big bee hood project

By jphillips

I have started to restore the hood on my 69 gtx ,(I needed a winter project),the hood had some fine cracks, and one nasty orange peel GASH !,,,so with a little bondo and lots of sanding, its almost ready for primer,,,I was looking for some advice on what kind of paint to use on the flat black part of the hood,,,so far the best match I found is a product called TRIM BLACK ,,,can anyone tell me of the proper paint to use or where to find it??,,,I will post some pics when finished,,thanks all.

Check a site called Moparts.com, I'm a member there also. They are a great source for Mopar specific restration, modification and racing. Post a question in their restoration section and you will get a dozen solid answers. I couldn't have done my GTX without them

Try Eastwood. They seem to have just about any color of paint necessary to properly restore a car. I don't have my catalog handy, but they do have a website, and you should be able to find what you need that way.

You should consider removing the "Scoops" and painting them separately. That way you'll have even coverage over the entire hood and no masking lines or thin spots down around the edges. Same with the turn signal repeaters, front edge hood/fender trim, and the driver's side wiper. (That's just my two cents... )

PPG paint codes (textured black for mopar hoods)
Organosol black ddl9355 Mixing Formula:
Strong black DMA358 794.5 or 804
Coarse Poly DMA349 24.4 or 24
Texture DMA364 171.1 or 972

I also found a 1969 Dodge Technical Service Bulletin describing what and how...it is in jpeg form. I'll post it in my garage.
