Danica Patrick Makes History

By motortopia

Danica Patrick made history this past weekend by becoming the first woman ever to win an IndyCar race.

Patrick won by 5.8594 seconds over race pole-sitter Helio Castroneves in the Indy Japan 300 on Sunday. Patrick started from the third row, and was as low as eighth place on lap 189. But an excellent fuel strategy propelled her to second place on lap 197, and on the 198th lap she passed Castroneves to take the lead in the 200-lap race.

Last year, Patrick finished seventh in the driver standings, and placed second in the Detroit Belle Isle race. In 2005, she made history by becoming the first woman ever to lead the Indianapolis 500, and finished fourth, also the best-ever finish for a woman.

Congrats Danica! The monkey is now off your back, and there will be more wins to come!

Glad to see Danica finally get the win monkey off her back!! I've been a big fan of hers since she came to Indy cars. She is one of the most talented Indy drivers I've seen over the years. Her being attractive is just a bonus, personally I think way to much is emphasis is placed on her looks. But I guess like the old saying goes "Any press is good press."

@GoIndependent: Yep, I agree with you. Drivers are drivers, and it should be just straight-up records that are discussed.

Alas, you'll always have records like "youngest driver to win the Indy 500" (Troy Ruttman,) "oldest driver to win the Indy 500" (Al Unser,) "first African-American to compete in the Indy 500" (Willy T. Ribbs, who was also the first African-American to compete in NASCAR, CART, and to test in Formula 1,) etc.

So I guess as long as records like that are singled out, then records based on gender will be singled out too, for better or for worse. I wouldn't be surprised to see a record for "youngest female driver to lead the Indy 500" or whatever. People just seem to be obsessed with records. smile image

I was unaware of the pole position break.......... well tie, so props to her for that. But I wouldn't site gender specific records. Those aren't records unless you want to start siting every different ethnicity as a specific record list. Drivers are drivers.

Leaving aside the gender-specific records (like the first female driver to finish on the podium in the Toyota Atlantic Series, the first female driver to lead the Indy 500, the highest starting position and highest finish ever for a female driver in the Indy 500, the first female driver to win an IndyCar race, along with several other similar records) she holds the record, along with Tomas Scheckter, for the most pole positions earned in a rookie season in IndyCar.

She is HOT!! and a great driver too!!
100lbs driver in a race car is a good thing.
Not sure about NASCAR because they might have to put a pillow under the seat and blocks on the pedals!! LOL. But good for her on the win!! You go girl, Indi 500 will be the big one.
Good luck Danica, Miss you on the power block TV show.

Dainica, is one great driver and deserves the win no matter what anyone else may say. I must say I would like to see her in a NASCAR ride even for one race.

That would be great to see Danica step up to Formula 1 someday. Hopefully, that happens while Bernie is still in power, so he gets to eat crow after the derogatory comments he made about Danica a couple years ago...
