Great American Pastime

By dragon_chick_99

I felt it was necessary to blog on this particular album, because i feel that cruise-ins are a great part of America. There has been people out there that are wanting to do away with anything that has anything to do with these great american cars, especially if a vehicle is 10 years or older. if this ever came to pass, it would effect dragonbird because she is now 10 years old.
On this particular cruise-in, the Elizabethton, TN city planner(don't know his name) was trying to do away with the cruise-in. He claimed that to many fights broke out and that the crime rate went up, that was a bold faced lie! Me and my husband goes to this cruise-in just about every saturday night and we have never seen any trouble. As a matter of fact crime actually went down. And with the economy the way it is, just think of the horrible blow this would have on the businesses that are in the downtown area! This man really wanted to do away with it because he doesn't get his pockets lined (go figure)
Well fortunatly the citizens of Elizabethton still have plenty of backbone. When the people heard of the ridiculous notion of banning the downtown cruise-in, they were outraged. They demanded a town meeting, especially the people who owns restaurants in the historic downtown section. One restaurant said that they would lose over 90,000 dollars if the cruise-in was taken away. With an average of 250-300 cars that comes down on a saturday evening, 2 people per car, and an average of $20 per person being spent it doesn't take a genious to do the math. Oh and lets not forget the stores who keeps their doors open during the cruise-in, and everybody knows that us women loves to shop :), so that would be that much more money that would be lost. So the cruise-in stays. Looks like that city planner needs to slow down on the stupid pills, as does all our politicians both local and federal.
So this just goes to show that no matter how stupid a thing our politicians try to pull, if we stick together and let our voices be heard LOUDLY we can overcome their stupidity. So if any of ya'll are ever close by come on down to downtown Elizabethton,TN and enjoy a great atmosphere with many a great rides. There is something for everyone :)

There are several cruise-ins in this area but one did unfortunately get shut down last year that was held at Bass Pro. I think a few ruined it for the many by spinning tires when leaving the parking lot, but I also believe that Bass Pro shut it down because it got too big. It's sad because it seemed to be a central location for the Hampton Roads area and a lot of cars came from all over the area.

A new cruise-in started up in a new development in Williamsburg (VA) and was actually initiated by the commercial development. It was a hit last year and they've asked us to come back. It's managed each weekend by a car club that collects $2 from each car and the money is donated to the Childrens Hospital of the Kings Daughters. A police car comes out to the cruise in and that probably helps to keep everyone on their best behavior.

Another new cruise in has started up this year in Virginia Beach at a farmers market but it is only the fourth Saturday night of the month and is only for cars 20 years or older.

There's always somebody in City Hall that thinks he has to interfere!
What an idiot!
