GMC started making the Sprint in 1971. The Sprint became the Caballero in 1978 and stuck with that name until GM discontinued the El Camino/Caballero. This one is a 1973 GMC Sprint. For 1973 GM sold 64,987 Chevy El Caminos and 6,776 GMC Sprints for a total of 71,753 vehicles sold that year. GMC's percentage of that was 9.4% or less than 1 in 10. That stayed pretty much the same from 1971 thru 1987. From 1959 to 1987 there were a total of 982,129 El Caminos made. From 1971 to 1987 there were only 74, 255 GMC Sprint/Caballeros made, for a total of 1,056,384 vehicles sold. GMC had only 7% of total production. Which makes the GMC Sprint/Caballero a really rare find. They were not common when they were new and the are practically unheard of today. Even rarer are the 1971 and 1972 GMC Sprint SP 454s, the counterpart to the El Camino SS. Only 14 were made. Not many people know that GMC made the Sprint/Caballero. Chevy's El Camino overshadowed it's GMC counterpart and was more popular. More famlies shopped at Chevy dealers because Chevy offered cars and trucks, whereas GMC offer only trucks. That is why the El Camino became the legend that it is and the GMC didn't.
