- just paid the other dudes back plate fee $277. it so lame in california. we you sell your car the plates go with the car. so someone can buy your car that has like 11months of validity of plates and drive around with out registering it. Also if someone lates there tags expire you have to pay the late fees to register it $277 in late fees. then it has to pass smog to get your stickers and yeah and pay the other guys late fees. i was really hesitent as to junk this car or fix up. going for the smog tomorrow. that could run 2 bills. so close to $600 to register a car you paid very little for. but thats how california gets these rust free old cars off the road
