Man Wins BMW M3 Auction on eBay; Dealer Reneges on Deal; The Interweb Roars; Man Gets Car?

By motortopia

Whew! We just finished reading a 40-page thread on the M3Post.com forums, and what a story it is.

It all started when forum member dooma350 came across an auction by BMW of Lincoln (Nebraska) for a 2008 BMW M3 Sedan. The auction had a starting bid of $60,000, no reserve, a but-it-now price of $66,926 and was advertised as the "LOWEST PRICE ON EBAY" for a new M3. He decided to bid, and got his financing in order. On Friday, it turned out he was the only bidder and won the auction. Here is where the story took a turn.

The dealership called him fifteen minutes after the auction ended and told him they had "made a mistake" and weren't going to honor the sale. dooma350 reminded the dealer of their contractual obligation through ebay, at which time, according to dooma350, the guy "had the nerve to condescendingly laugh and say we are a multi-million dollar company, ebay will definitely side with us."

I'm thinking that got dooma350 a little worked up. Over the weekend, the story started to spread like wildfire all over the Internet, to automotive and consumer blogs, forums, and even viral news sites like Digg and Fark. To make a long story short, the dealer was inundated with emails and phone calls supporting dooma350, and as of this morning, BMW of Lincoln has told dooma350 they will honor the sale, but "with conditions." doom350 will find out those conditions tomorrow.

And it seems the entire Internet community of automotive enthusiasts will be watching.

If you have some time, click here to read the entire thread over at M3Posts.com.

Try to cover it up and keep it quiet just like B.J. did when they got called on their own criminal actions.

Well, it started out to be and interesting story. Perhaps it is going to be the story with no end! Where is the confusion? The dealer can easily give the guy the car for the price, and get great press out of it. I should not have retired. Is there no one left that knows how to turn something like this into a great publicity plus?

God, I give up!

If you have ever delt with husker auto group this won't suprise you. I have had a couple run-ins with them and they are the quintessential used are salesmen style business. I hope this educates people to their style of business and instructs everyone to go up to omaha for your Mercedes and BMW purchases.

Well, here's the latest on the "conditions":

First, they wanted him to agree not to sell the car for a certain number of years. He got his lawyer to remove that condition.

Second, they asked him to assist in defusing the situation by letting the sites he contacted know that he was getting his deal. He said he didn't mind doing that, and contacted m3post.com, Channel 8 in Lincoln, the BBB and eBay to let them know things were moving in a positive direction. However, BMW of Lincoln seemed to imply that he wasn't being proactive enough in getting the word out there, and implied that he was to blame for the firestorm that occurred, and then they made some pretty flippant comments in a local newspaper article, so that is kind of pissed him off a bit.

They are still in negotiations, and he'll give another update when he knows more.

Wow, this is an interesting story! I didn't have time to read the 55 pages in the forum, but I read a few including the newspaper article and there is a link to the ebay auction. I think it is only fair the guy gets his M3, but we'll see what these so called condition are...
