I'll bet lots of you have customized plates for your cars. Well, check out this plate from Virginia. Someone was not thinking ahead...or maybe they were :-). [photo from photobucket]

In Wyoming you only get 4 letters, so you don't have quite as many choices, but some other cool plates I've seen are '12NV'-one to envy, 'DVS'-devious, 'NVS'-envious. If I get another I think I'll try to get 'NFMS'-infamous.

I had a personalized plate on my 89 Suburban 'DBOX' The suburban is kind of a big box and my last name is DeBock. Kind of a double meaning, it was cool.

I've been into license plates since I was a kid. They were a cheap way for a young car nut to get involved in the car hobby. I own about 50 expired vanity plates now. Many are family-related, and some are in other theme categories... I've got about a dozen Christian-themed plates, for instance.

My favorite recalled plate story concerns former race driver and automotive journalist Denise McCluggage. She had the plates "DOG" on the front and back of her English Rover 2000GT in the late 60's. Hey, everybody has a dog named Rover - She had a Rover named DOG! The DMV in her New England state (I forget which one at the moment) had several complaints from drivers about looking in their rear view mirrors and seeing that the car following them had "GOD" on it's plate!

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - A retired police officer is seeking a court order to force the state Department of Motor Vehicles to drop its demand that he return vanity license plates calling for the capture or death of Osama bin Laden.

Arno Herwerth, a 21-year veteran of the New York Police Department, said he requested the “GETOSAMA” plates earlier this month to send a political message. He said he was surprised to hear, after receiving the plates, that the DMV wanted them back.

In a Nov. 15 letter to Herwerth, the agency cited a regulation prohibiting plates that could be considered “obscene, lewd, lascivious, derogatory to a particular ethnic group or patently offensive.” It returned his previous generic license plates and asked that he send the “GETOSAMA” plates, which were issued Nov. 2, back to its Albany headquarters.

Herwerth, 42, said in a phone interview that it was important to him that the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which bin Laden is accused of orchestrating, be remembered.

“I got the plates because of 9/11,” he said. “I want to keep the message alive that this man needs to be killed or captured. It’s been a long time, but we haven’t forgotten.”

Now that's an Idea, have the members submit, off the wall personalize plates, and see who can find the best one of sorts.. My family and I always looks for crazy plates on our trips and boy we have seen funny ones...
