Reminiscing about my Corvairs... ALL of them!

By CorvairJim

Filed under: 1966 Chevrolet Corvair ("Ashley")

The subject came up recently while messaging back and forth with a friend of mine as to how many of our favorite type of car each of us have owned. I told him that I'd had 14 Corvairs and, after some thought, came up with this list (The numbers after the descriptions refer to the drivetrain the car had in "Corvair-speak" - first the engine's factory horsepower rating, then the transmission, either # of gears for a manual box or the notation "PG" for a Powerglide automatic):

1) Dark Green '65 Monza Sport Coupe - 110/4 (daily driver - posted in my garage - "Toni")
2) White '66 Monza Sport Coupe - 110/PG (parts car)
3) Maroon'66 Monza Sport Coupe - 110/PG (became a parts car after driving it for about 6 months; really rough!)
4) Silver Blue '66 500-Series Sport Sedan - 110/4 (daily driver)
5) Royal Plum (!) '67 500-Series Sport Sedan - 96/PG (daily driver)
6) Blue '61 700-Series Lakewood Station Wagon - 102/PG (sold too soon - posted in my garage - "Woodie")
7) Gold '64 Monza Sedan - 110/PG (My 1991 Corvair Society of America Convention car - posted in my garage - "Goldylocks")
8) White/Gold '63 Monza Sedan - 102/PG (became parts)
9) White '61 Greenbrier Deluxe Van - '64 truck 110/4 (semi-daily driver - posted in my garage - "The Kelvinator")
10) Dark Green '65 Corsa Convertible - 140/4 (became parts - WAY over my head in this one!)
11) Beige '65 Monza Sport Sedan - 95/4 - A/C (stolen!)
12) White/Yellow'65 Monza Sport Sedan - 140/PG (occasional driver)
13) White/Turquoise '60 700-Series Sedan - 84/PG (project with my daughter - posted in my garage - "The Smurfmobile")
14) Lemonwood Yellow '66 Monza Sport Coupe - 140/4 (my baby - posted in my garage - "Ashley")

Hey, I remembered them all! How many of your favorite model can YOU remember?

It's easy for me, since I've only had two cars so far!
1) 1985 Mustang GT Turbo - I rare car that didn't run worth beans and leaked oil like a sieve! I bought it because I was a high school kid with some money and a new license and I wanted a hot car. It looked hot from 20 feet, but a Cavalier could take it at a traffic light!
2) 1999 BMW M3 - My current ride and the fastest thing in the neighborhood! My dad (RangeMan here on Motortopia) was blessed enough to come into some money a few years ago and helped me buy a decent car to replace my P.O.S. Mustang. I can't think of any other car I'd want at the moment to replace my 11 year old factory hot rod!

Wow, that's an impressive list. I've owned a number of cars too, but not of all the same brand. Howewver, here's a list of just my VW's:

1) 1970 Yukon yellow, Beetle, factory sunroof. Came from the factory with a 1600cc single port 4-cyl engine, 4sp.
2) 1969 Ruby Red Beetle. Came from the factory with a 1500cc engine, auto-stick trans (converted to manual 4-sp)
3) 1962 Beetle, originally "beryl green", but it was repainted dark green at some point. It came from the factory with a 40hp 1200cc engine, 4-sp trans. My "version" of the car is in my "garage" with its flat black paint and 11 second drivetrain. I miss that car!
4) 1963 Type 2 Transporter, Single Cab truck (still own it). I bought it primered, but original color was "pearl white." It came from the factory with a 40hp 1200cc engine, 4-sp reduction-box geared trans, but if you click over to my "garage" you'll see that its all changed. 8-)
5) 1964 Karmann Ghia. A respray of the original color called "Sea Blue." Came from the factory with a 40hp 1200cc engine, 4-sp trans. (still own this car too). Click over to my "garage" for photos and stats of its current state of "tune."
6) 1973 Type 181 Thing (or "Trekker" as they were called over in Europe). Original color is on the car and is called "brilliant orange." This came from the factory with a 58hp 1600cc dual port engine, 4-sp trans. This is my latest project that I purchased in '08. Still in progress with a few photos posted in my "garage."

I'd love to add a #7 to the list by acquiring a completely stock early Beetle 1958 thru 1966. I always modify my VW's and I'd like to have a complete stock one to putt around in.
