Was jamming back from the o.c and classics industries in my 79 trans am with factory olds 403 and spun a main bearing. Does anyone know if this a common issue? I'd like to keep the car number matching, but cost is an issue. it still runs but has a hard core knock coming from the bottom of the pan. Would that idicate its a rebuildable canidate? Or is a totally tear down and having a machine shop check all the spec the only way to se if it rebuildable.
Also does anyone have experience swapping a 77 pontiac 400 for the olds 403i n trans am? is it an easy swap?

The swap to a pontiac 400 would be an easy swap, the fuel pump is on the opposite side..but not a big deal to run some fuel lines across to the other side, I did mine across and attached to the engine cross member. The motor mounts are in the same position. Of course you will need all the accessory brackets (Alt, air cond) for the 400.

Pretty hard to repair in the car, much easier to remove the motor. If you only spun a Main, you can do a crank rebuild and bearings. But you should consider how many miles are on the car as it might be a good time to update everything.

As for the swap, it is very easy. About as easy as a swap can be. Motor Mounts are needed for sure and there will be other things, but the Trans is fine. Buy a rusty TA for all the parts you will need that has a 400 in it!!

Not enough time to explain everything, but it is certainly a simple swap as swaps go. Good Luck.
