About “The Monzter”

This is a 1978 Monza hatchback I am working on. One of three I own. This is in work and could take a little while to finish. It is going to be my new all out drag racing car. I hope to race it when or if the new Nebraska Motorplex opens. If it never does I will race it wherever I can.

Specs for “The Monzter”

The chassis is a 2 x 3 mild steel frame rails with the rest of the chassis being made out of all chrome moly. I have the body off so I can weld in a funny car cage so I can get it to pass tech for 7.50's.
The transmission I am using is a 2 speed 1.76 geared powerglide.
The motor I plan to use first is a 814 HP 355 SB Chevy and the final motor will be a 900+ 15 degree 406 SB Chevy. This one I have the bottom end together but the parts for the heads are a little expensive yet.
The rearend is a 9" Ford.
The body will be a 1978 Chevy Monza Spyder hatchback.
The interior will be all custom made.

Factory Options for “The Monzter”

This car would have been a 305 SB Chevy with a Turbo 250 trans. The rearend would have been a 7.5" 10 bolt (Weak) with very high gears. It would have also had 13" wheels and tires. These were not much of a performance car. Some had a factory front and rear spoilers. The curb weight was just over 2800 lbs dry.

Mods for “The Monzter”

CHASSIS- Custom 2x3 square tube frame rails. Custom chrome moly round tube everywhere else on the chassis. Plans include Competition Orange color paint and Orange aluminum. Has dual rear mount batteries. Plans also include a funny car cage out of chrome moly to get certified to 7.50's. That is why the body is still off the car.

MOTOR 1 -- 355 SB Chevy with a Dart Little M block. Forged steel crank, Manley Aluminum 6" rods, and SRP 12.7 to 1 dome pistons. Old style Brodix Track 1 aluminum heads with 2.08/1.60 valves, 1.550 springs, shaft mount 1.6 rockers, ported, polished, and flowed. The intake is a GM Bowtie Intake ported, polished, and flowed to match the heads with a Brodix BB Chevy Turtle in the plenium. The cam is a Lunati custom 4-7 swap solid roller grind with over .682 lift. I am using a Comp cams dry belt drive, a CSI electric water pump, Fluidampre balancer, aluminum pullies. The oil system is a wet sump Milodon system and pan. All studs and bolts are ARP. The carb is a Mighty Demon 850 CFM with annular discharge nozzles.

MOTOR 2 -- 406 SB Chevy with 14.5 compression, billet crankshaft, aluminum 6" rods, completely filled (for using alcohol) block. Heads are Brodix -12, 15 degree aluminum heads with 2.100/1.65 valves, and rocker shafts. The cam is a custom grind with .750 lift. Intake will probably be another Bowtie intake. This motor is not done yet but will probably be alcohol injected of some sort. It does have an external wet sump oil system.

FUEL -- Barry Grant King Demon RS 1095 CFM. The remiainder of the fuel system to the carb is Magna Fuel Pro Star 500 with AN12 to AN10 to AN8 braided lines. The fuel cell is mounted up front and is custom made from aluminum.

NOS -- Is a Big Shot plate system capable of producing up to 400 HP.

IGNITION -- This is an Electromotive HV1 crank trigger ignition system. It uses 4 coil packs and is almost totally self contained. The coils and adjustments can be mounted just about anywhere in the car. Closest to the motor is ideal. The distributor hole just runs a plug for dry sump and a shaft type plug to turn the oil pump drive for wet sump systems.

TRANSMISSION -- I am using a Powerglide with a TCI Pro Tree transbrake. I have a J.W. Bellhousing and tailshaft. The stall convertor is a TCI 5200-5800 with anti ballooning plates.

REAREND -- 9" Ford with Strange 35 spline axles and spool. It has a nodular case with 4.56 gears or a Strange aluminum center section with 5.28 Pro gears. This rearend has been cut down to 35" and uses Wilwood rear brakes. This is a custom ladder bar set up with QA1 coil overs and 150 lb springs.

Master cyclinder is a Mopar unit mounted under the floor.

SUSPENSION -- The front is using Mustang II rack and pinion, a-arms, and Chassis Engineering coil overs. Stock bushings. Changing possibly to tubular A-arms.

INTERIOR -- Not completed yet. Just has a Kirky seat and cover. Orange roll bar padding and aluminum is in the works.

BODY -- Mostly fiberglass except for the roof and quarters. One piece lift off front clip. 8" Aero Hood scoop molded on the hood. Lexan for the windows and a pro stock style aluminum wing. Will have dual parachutes. I also have Art Morrison spring loaded wheelie bars. Trying to figure out an aerodynamic look for the side of the car. Car sits about 3" off the ground. I plan on painting it 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Pearl Burnt Orange Metallic.
