About “Alternomad II”

(Please note that, because this is a scale model and not an actual car I will only accept challenges against other models, diecasts, toys, etc.)

Auto designer and customizer Thom Taylor created the "Alternomad" concept almost as soon as the last generation Caprice station wagon debuted in 1993. His concept was styled after the 1957 Nomad and had 1957-style side trim and tailfins. It also had a forward-sloping B-Pillar. I thought that pillar looked out of place with the rest of the car's design, and would also make getting in and out of the car difficult, so I reversed it's slant. Just as a personal preference' I've always liked the side trim of the 1956 model the best of all the "Tri-5" Chevys, so I adapted it to my version of the car. I lopped off the '57-style fins and recontoured the quarter panels to the stock configuration. I then went about adding some of the trademark Nomad styling touches that Mr. Taylor left off the car: The creases running across the roof and the vertical chrome strips on the tailgate. To top them off, I added a replica of the 1956 Chevy emblem, complete with it's "Vee" beneath it. Mr. Taylor's car had a body colored Impala SS-style grille surround, but I thought it would be more in keeping with the style of the car to have it chromed instead, so that's the way I did it on mine. Finally, as a tribute to the Hot Wheels "Custom Nomad" I had as a kid, I added a sunroof over the front seat!

Inside the car, I added the usual sun visors, seat belts, dome light, and flocked carpeting.
