      Hey everybody,

      Check this out, I came across this on the FastVairs email list. Jonathan McCreery has just installed an LS1 V-8 into the back of his late-model corvair. Here is what he says:

      "Got the motor in last week. It's mated to a 911 turbo
      tranny. The porsche tranny weighs 50Lbs less than the
      corvair's the shipping weight of the motor with pallet
      was 460 Lbs. With the AC , powersteering pump and
      factory maniolds off of it we managed to strip 83 Lbs
      off the motor.

      The harness is from Howell and uses an LS1 Edit Eprom
      , the intake is turned around and uses a BBK TB (can't
      use drive by wire) the tranny was cryo treated and has
      a 40% LSD in it with the revised longer turbo gears.

      Should have it running next week

      A true 370-380hp Rear engined Vair... the package
      weighs just afew Lbs more than the 215 Olds it replaces."

      Very interesting. I'm just curious about the weight distribution since the motor sits completely in the rear. Is this a straight shooter? Will this car handle well under normal driving conditions? How have the dynamics of handling been balanced out? Very impressive project.....however, I don't think I could muster up that much bravery to tackle a project like this one anytime soon. I'd like to see how it turns out.

      I'm not sure how heavy those LS1's are. I'll keep an eye out for any more info on this project and post anything I come across.

      497 Lbs. according to GM specs but that can vary depending on personal preference and set-up. As he mention he managed to strip 83 pounds off whatever he had for a total weight on the crated motor. I'm not sure how much that porsche tranny weighs though. What are wieght specs on the stock 140?

      I believe it weighs somewhere between 200 and 250 lbs. I'd have to dig out some of my Corvair books to double check that though.

      I got some more info.

      The engine itself is about 300 lbs, the transaxle is about 150 lbs, for a total of about 450 lbs for the drivetrain.

      Interesting...the Corvair drivetrain is almost exactly 450 pounds stock. Center of gravity would be slightly higher with the LS1, and the weight slightly more rearward due to the lighter weight Porsche transaxle, but pretty dang comparable. This guy is also selling his old 215 V8 setup for a very reasonable price, but he's in Canada which is a long way for me to go to buy an engine!

      Great Idea...I think when I'm done with my current truck, I may shorten my other rampside and drop a V-8 in it...I am not sure if it is solid enough to handle the extra power though...as far as weight goes...you can lower a corvair motor onto your chest while you are on a creeper and then slide it out relatively easily...i can't imagine it is really 450 pounds...with all the extras off, it felt closer to ~250 or 300 lbs.
       

       

      My Corvair doesn't leak oil...It just marks its territory!

      Everything fit in the rear??? Most conversion I've seen they take up the back seat. Very interesting!!
