Topic: challenges on the site
#51 Aug 12, 2008 at 11:05 amI dont put my ride's up for challenges. I know what I have and dont need anyone telling me that my ride is substandard to there opinion. I joined Motortopia for the friends and to have other people to talk to when I have a problem. Also to see what is out there maybe get some ideas on the Mod's they have done good or bad.
If every one liked the same thing it would be a boring world and no one would win a challenge.
#52 Aug 12, 2008 at 1:56 pmLots of good comments and feedback. smokegrey has a good idea about letting newcomers know what challenges are all about, I'm fairly new and really don't know how it works, I just know how to vote when I get a feed telling me about it.
Let's keep it lighthearted and fun, not trying to prove you're the best or #1 all the time.
#53 Aug 13, 2008 at 10:55 amEveryone,
Thanks for the discussion so far. We have some good ideas being floated around here.
I am assembling the suggestions internally here at Motortopia so we can discuss them all in-house. There is lots to think about here.
One thing that is clear, the people who don't want to participate in challenges can opt-out of being challenge currently (although we can make this process easier, and perhaps the default) but what they CANNOT do right now is opt-out of getting a bunch of emails every day from people asking them to vote for them in a challenge.
Obviously, we can't control what people type in private messages, but maybe we can make it clear, on the page where you compose a private message, that bugging members for challenge votes is frowned upon, and people's messaging ability and/or account on Motortopia could be removed for doing that.
Also, we have added the "report as spam" link on private messages recently, I think a lot of people would consider people asking for challenge votes to be "spam" so if we got several spam reports in about a person asking for votes, we could contact that person and tell them to stop.
Anyway, that is just an aspect of challenges that I hadn't thought about before.
Like I said, we are taking ALL the ideas right now, and discussing them internally. Once we pick out which ones we think will work, we can discuss them further with those who want to help refine the ideas.

#55 Aug 17, 2008 at 12:12 amI have an idea about challenges I have not seen anything about here yet. How about when you send out a challenge and it is in the "waiting" status that you make it so it is not there more than a couple of days, a week, or so. I have some in my garage older than three months and I forget to remove them. I just went on vacation for a week or more and came back to find some of them that have been there for months were actually accepted. By the time I got on this site today they were already over. Not that I would have been able to change anything if voted fairly but I have always wanted to have a time limit on them and then they are removed automatically.
I have another question but it does not pertain to challenges but figured I would mention it. I would like to address that when you have messages whether sent or received couldn't you have a tab for "delete all" for them? After I send out messages to all my friends to look at a new album I have to sit and delete 25 messages at a time which is really time consuming. Especially if or when you have many friends on your lists as I do. Just thought it would help others too!!
I do like the idea of proving you own the car but couldn't it be as easily as sending in a current copy of your title, registration, or even insurance card? Not everybody takes good pics or cars are in work or something to that nature. I actually joined motortopia using the pics a motortopia photographer (Corsa I think) took at a local car show as I really did not have any of my own. Most of my pics are from local car shows that spectators had taken.
I also like the idea of groups challenging groups, and even breaking down cars into categories, Pro Street, custom, stock, trucks, whatever trips your triggers. It can be made a little more fair for people but as said friends will vote usually for friends or the type of cars they like. I have been on the receiving end of this before because some people don't like Monzas. I did not get mad as we all have different tastes. Some of our local car shows actually break down a Pro Street/Race category as a drag car cannot be compared to a $70K trailer queen as drag/race cars are beat up every time they get on a track and if anybody has ever tried to have a show and race a car both can attest that it is almost impossible to have both. We break stuff, have leaks, have oil downs, and shoot rubber all under and sometimes on the outer quarters of these cars. They get scratched up working on them even if trying to be careful. Have you ever seen a race car interior? Nothing but business not glitz and glam or $20K interiors.
Now I have met a lot of great people here on motortopia and a lot of them have been through the challenges. If you cannot accept losing one or more in this site you probably shouldn't get involved. I agree to find a way for the new people to get used to this site first and accept challenges only if ready or comfortable. All these ideas had some significance of helping one way or another. But as stated it will begin new complaints as well. Good luck in figureing it all out as it will not be easy. I still prefer to vote on the car and not who ownes it!! Just my .02 .
Monzter was here!! Click on this photo to go directly to my challenges and vote on them Please.

What more can I say? Challenges hold no value. When you challenge someone that doesn't even have a car - you are doing it for flavor. Look at the standings - everyone listed is from a certain group. A new member of that group (and a friend of mine) finally broke into the leader board because he joined the group. Have you no shame??
#57 Aug 19, 2008 at 12:36 pmAnd if it wasn't the truth - you wouldn't be so quick to be defensive. No group was mentioned.
#58 Aug 19, 2008 at 8:03 pmI though we were gonna leave the bull in the past and try to make the future better? But I guess some things wont change for the better as long as we dwell in the past
#59 Aug 20, 2008 at 12:27 ami'm glad to see us apologizing to each other
forget the past and lets fix this
bickering isn't gona do any good
and im with bad dawg i think you can have challenge groups
and you should be a member of a challenge group before you can join in their challenges
an individual hasn't a chance against a group
individuals should battle individuals
and challenge groups should be designated as so
