On my 99 I put in a K&N air filter about 3 or 4 years ago and about 3 months ago the transmission had a burp between 1st & 2nd and maybe about 20% less power. My mech.has had it and found that the K&N air filter was giving off an oil that was messing up my mass air flow and burnt out 2 lower oxygen censors. He replaced all 3 and now everything is all better.
Has anyone ever heard of this?

bunch of crap. How many miles does your K&N have on it? It sounds to me like he just wanted a reason why they went bad. Mass air flow and O2 sensor fail all the time. If the maf has been bad or sending the wrong reading for any amount of time then that could have caused the O2's to go bad. Did you have the car at the dealer when they told you this? Also when is the last time you oiled the filter? there is a very small chance if you over oiled it that could happen. But there a better chance if it wasn't at the dealer that they throw parts at it until it was fixed. Then they gave you this great story about how a filter thats been there for years caused the problem. I've worked in this field long enough to know a lot of shady stuff goes on. And long enough to know most newer car should be left to people that went to school for them (unless being modded). That isn't saying that every dealership or every tech at a dealership is worth going to.
My two cents
PaulRacing is only done on tracks. Anything done on the street is for your ego not for sport.

I did have this problem also, it is case of the oil in the filter to heavy and causing small particals to stick to the sensor. The need for is growing and spring is time to bring out the BARR"S AM for the shake down run, hope all of you are ready as I am.

good to hear she's running smooth nowbut i don't know if you know this or not, but it's good to clean your MAF every now and then with carb cleaner, because even with a regular air filter it'll still get dirty and that'll rob some power from your car. of course as far as the K&N air filter goes, in my opinion it's the best out there

I've used K&N filters in quite a few vehicles, (have one under the SLP lid on the Hawk) and have never had a problem but have heard of many who have. The oil coats the MAF sensor as others have said. Be careful not to over oil it, and make sure it's nice and soaked in before you drive. The carb cleaner might be ok, but I would use electronics cleaner available in most parts stores now as that little bugger is quite sensitive. Hope to see you and little wing on the run next year!James~

Glad to hear the issue is resolved!
I have K&N in the Shark, and have for years...no worries, but also a 3rd Gen.
My SUV has the stock filters always has, and the sensor went out...
It sucks when stuff goes wrong, glad you are rolling!
Cheers
