I like using a short piece of 2x4. You can still use the base of the board to turn the model.

It's long enough that I can hold it by the hook end to turn the model body whichever way I need to to get paint coverage, then I hang it by the hook for the paint to dry.

I use the same method and where the hook is on the bottom, I usually set something heavy on it to hold it up.
