Hi - Great looking car. I purchased he first 1968 Javelin from Devonian Motors in Edmonton when it arrived. I was 18 at the time and need my Dad to sign a loan for me. He was a big Rambler fan and thought I would kill myself with a Mustang or Camaro but said he would sign the loan if I bought a Rambler. Little did he know what was to show up from Rambler in the form of a Javelin. It was a light blue, 343, automatic, black interior. Traded it in for a new Camero in 1970. Wish I still had it!

1968 AMC Javelin SST (The Jav)

Last updated Apr 8, 2007

Photo of a 1968 AMC Javelin SST (The Jav)

The AMC Javelin was produced from 1968 through 1974 intended as a 'pony' car for the American Motors Corporation.
The 'Javelin' model name debuted September 26, 1967. To fit into a wide variety of budgets, AMC offered the Javelin with a choice of engines that included either 6 or 8 cylinders along with a variety of other options. The more “upscale model being the SST.
This would be AMC/Rambler's first blatant attempt to compete head-to-head with the Big 3 car companies in the growing 'Pony Car' wars. Going head to head with the Mustang, Camaro / Firebird and Dart/Barracuda platforms.
Almost in spite of itself, the automotive press immediately took to the Javelin, drawn by the car's sleek, no-nonsense look that retains its attractiveness today. The design hinted at the long hood-short deck Mustang profile, but it was uncluttered in a way quite unlike the Mustang with sweeping expanses of sheet metal and a semi-fastback roofline. The split grille front-end was equally uncluttered, matched by a tasteful rear-end treatment with none of the fussiness of the Mustang's three-part taillights.

Despite success on the track, the times were running hard against the Javelin. With safety, insurance, and fuel economy concerns smacking pony car fans, the Javelin's days ran out.

But not before the “Javelin” had given American Motors one shining moment in the sun.
