1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Coupe (Mighty Mouse)

Photo of a 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Coupe (Mighty Mouse)

About

"Mighty Mouse" is a 1970 Chevy Monte Carlo that was purchased in 2001 as a project for my dad and me.

When we found Mighty Mouse had 23,000 original miles, no rust, and was in running condition. However, mice had taken up residence in the interior (hence Mighty Mouse) so the interior was gutted, cleaned and what wasn't salvageable was replaced by original or reproduction pieces from Year One and Original Parts Group (seat covers & foam, carpet, headliner). As we started cleaning and restoring the car it became very clear that it had been virtually untouched from the factory. All the original owner had done was cover the original Shadow Gray paint (which had apparently oxidized over the years) with an '88 GMC Gunmetal Gray.

Specs

Engine: 355cid, Scat crank, Speed-Pro flat-top hypereutectic pistons, a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy cam, World Sportsman II 2.02/1.60/72cc heads with Manley valves, Pertonix Flame-Thrower billet distributor with 45,000v coil, and topped by an Edelbrock Performer intake with a 625cfm Barry Grant Road Demon carb.

Differential: Eaton Posi with 3.55 Richmond gears.

Wheels & Tires: 17 x 8" Boyd Coddington Nemesis wheels front & rear with Kumho Ecsta High Performance rubber (245/45 front, 255/55 rear).

Transmission: 200-4R overdrive (Level II from Bowtie Overdrives).

Mods

The numbers-matching 250hp 350 was pulled and stored and replaced with a 325hp 355 starting with a Scat crank, Speed-Pro flat-top hypereutectic pistons, a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy cam, World Sportsman II 2.02/1.60/72cc heads with Manley valves, Pertonix Flame-Thrower billet distributor with 45,000v coil, and topped by an Edelbrock Performer intake with a 625cfm Barry Grant Road Demon carb. The original 2.78 Tempest rear (many late model year 70's had Pontiac rear end units due to a strike at some GM plants) was replaced with an Eaton Posi unit and 3.55 Richmond gears. The entire front suspension was disassembled and new bushings, ball joints and front end hardware were installed. New springs replaced the sagging rears and help give Mighty Mouse its classic muscle car stance. Lastly, it was given new shoes with 17 x 8" Boyd Coddington Nemesis wheels front & rear shod in Kumho Ecsta High Performance rubber (245/45 front, 255/55 rear).

Earlier this year we swapped the TH-350 for a 200-4R overdrive from Bowtie Overdrives.

Eventually we hope to get the body completely restored (including a new vinyl top).
