1971 Mercury Comet (Undecided)

About

This car was originally going to be my father's; Back in 2007 he was reading through classified ads for cars and spotted an ad for a "1971 Mercury Comet, runs good, don't need anymore" from an offroad shop in Gardena. The seller (also the owner of the shop) built mainly Broncos and bought the Comet from a family(the original owners) to use the engine for a customer's car. The customer ended up going with a 347 crate engine so the shop owner didn't have much use for the Comet. Originally I wanted a Foxbody Mustang but when I heard about this car from my father I figured it couldn't hurt to go check it out, after seeing the car and driving it, I fell in love. The pull from the 302, the car's classic looks, the smell of oil and old upholstery... I was hooked.

Since then I have done a lot to this car... Performance wise it has headers, an edelbrock intake and carb an rebuilt C4 with a transgo kit, ported heads(bigger valves, better springs, looking for aluminum roller rockers next), a mild cam that I'm not sure on the specs of, but considering the idle quality over other stock cam engines of this year, I would assume it's a "Torque" cam or "RV" cam. An Accel points eliminator kit and an Accel coil and wires. Just about everything has been replaced with the exception of the rear diff(gonna go 3.73s with a spool soon) and I will also be getting an aluminum radiator and water pump as well. Of course the age old mantra of "if it don't make you go faster, then it goes in the trash" has ben upheld here, as just about everything has been gutted such as the in dash A/C box, spare tire, sound deadener, stereo system, front and rear bench seats..not that there was much to toss, but I'm sure I got rid of at least 200lbs removing all that crap.)

Plans for the future include stroking the 302(347) finishing the conversion to manual steering(box and center link), front discs, and finishing the bodywork to spray a nice satin black over.

Specs

Engine:V8, 302ci
HP:260(est.)
1/4 Mile:High 13s

Factory Options

In 1971 the base car had a 170ci six cylinder and a 3 speed manual. My car could be considered, "optioned out" as it has the optional 302 V8 ( a 200 and 250 ci were other options) and the C4 transmission.
