About

After owning an array of Mopar stuff, and selling my 66 Valiant , I was looking for a 65-71 Dodge pickup. I looked at a few but did not buy them. Advice to all men.... never let your wife know how much money you have set aside for a toy. My wife saw it there and saw it there and saw it there and then came the new minivan for her....

After regrouping what was left of the money fronm the sale of the car I was left looking to see what was in my price range, and it needed to be a driver...A body chrysler.... nope 10K for a good roller...B body... only the 70's stuff was available, with /6 power in really awful colours... nope E body stuff.... note even close. The Ford stuff I like is really hard to find, the German Capri's, 60's Mustangs , Comets, Galaxy's and Fairlanes and really expensive too. The mid year Corvettes I like are also out of my budget right now. Looked at a couple of old Willy's wagons and panels but most were rolling deathtraps. So I looked around and around and came across this Beetle. I had owned 1 as my very first car, so it wasnt really a stretch to buy one. And my oldest buddy from grade school used to have a baja..... this could be fun

Specs

Mechanically, the vehicle is mostly stock, but does have aftermarket cylinders and barrels, I think its a 1641. To give the car the right look, the very first thing I had to do was get the right stance. The previous owner had the right rear rims on it but was still running the stock front wheels.... with hubcaps.... When I measured the back rims to see what I could find to update from the tired Cragar SS rims on it, I discovered that they where a vintage pair of 15 x 8.5 rims with an unavailable backspacing. This required some thinking. Found a set of matching 14 x 6 at a garage sale. A quick trip to the powder coater and WOW. After a very exhaustive search, I found the last known set of 14" offroad truck tires...and upgraded the rears from the 205's to 235's . now we talking

Factory Options

The only factory that the car still has is the ability to draw a crowd of women and children, it's like a magnet.

Also installed an Empi shifter for a more precise control of gear selection, and just changed the shifter ball to a B&mM "T" handle. A Grant stering wheel , which required 2 adaptors to space it out right from the switchs on the column. The Bug is sporting an aftermarket Baja kit of unknown manufacture, with black painted baja cage bumpers on both ends. Seats that were in the car when I bought it were out of a 90's VW (Golf?) and did not fit properly, so a search was on for proper seats. After a year of looking I found a matching set of front and rear seats out of a 81 MEXICAN Beetle. Still need to do the interior and a body and paint are in the works... After I finish repairing the hacked up wiring that I keep running into...
