1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass Vista Cruiser (Vista Kreuger)

Last updated May 26, 2009

Photo of a 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass Vista Cruiser (Vista Kreuger)

No longer owned

My first beast, Vista Kreuger, The had many nicknames at my high school. It was a great car...well, it was a terrible car that had some great things about it. My parents had bought it new and it broke down a block away from the dealership...that was a sign. The car had problems the whole time we owned it, though the mechanical issues went away entirely after 100k miles...go figure. The worst were the weird electrical gremlins...power locks would occasionally work, and would choose which doors to open based on its mood. The lights would sometimes not work, and turn signal bulbs blew on a regular basis. Finally took it to the junkyard after 13 years and 163k miles when the trans started to slip so badly that it would barely move...probably still running somewhere

- 116 inch wheelbase with an overall length of 2 football fields
- Oldsmobile Rocket 350 (with a Rochester 4bbl big enough to stick a fist in)
- TH350 3spd auto with slippage and a banging noise (from too many neutral drops, no doubt)
- Probably a low 1/4 mile time, but the 60ft times were awesome...constantly blew away 5.0 Mustangs at the stoplight
- 6mpg....highway (seriously!)

Factory Options

- Positraction and studded snows made it unstoppable in the bias-ply recaps and grabby front discs kept it unstoppable in the snow...
- Phony woodgrain siding and faded light blue metallic paint...the stick-on siding was actually holding it together (I know because I tried to peel it and lost part of a quarter panel)
- 8 Track cassette deck that would usually play out of all four speakers (see electrical gremlins above)

- About 40 golf tees in various vacuum hoses...(whenever it ran poorly, we'd take it to the mechanic, he'd open the hood and listen for a minute, then reach right in and find a disconnected vacuum hose (or pull it himself) and stick a golf tee in it...and it would run perfectly smoothly)
- Boombox in the back seat for playing casettes and CD's through a casette adapter
- Sometime in the early 80's, the carb had to be rebuilt so my dad had the mechanic put a much larger one became a beast after that
