My wife had a '79 Datsun B210 when we got married. It gave way to a '98 Sunfire convertible that we still have but is a piece of crap now. I still have my '79 Chevy truck that I bought for $800 and have done a little work just to keep it running. The wife keeps asking me why I don't get rid of it and get a newer one and I tell her that it is used to haul STUFF and I wouldn't want to haul a lot of STUFF in a newer one. I can throw things in the bed and not worry about it. It starts every time I get in it and has been real reliable. I agree with CorvairJim about the "cheap wheels" are the best.

Sometimes, "cheap wheels" are the best kind. They get you through the tough times, you don't mind abusing them on occasion (and they usually seem to thrive on it!). I've had my share of cars like that, and I usually wound up selling them at a profit after I was done with them.

1978 Datsun 510 (Ole Reliable)

About

I actually owned two of these cars, both of the ones pictured. I acquired the wagon on the cheap from a friend in 1985 and put about 150,000 miles on it (on top of the 50,000 my friend had put on it) before I gave it away 11 years later. We never had to do any major repairs to it other than replace the clutch. There was a period of time where I was out of work for a year or so, picking up occasional temporary work here and there, and money was so tight I couldn't even afford a few quarts of oil to change the oil; in spite of going over a year without an oil change, the car still ran great and didn't use any oil when I passed it on to a friend.
The other Datsun, a 2-door coupe, I bought from another friend 3 years after I got the wagon at his insistence for $100. We didn't need another car, but at the price I couldn't turn it down. The coupe came from Utah, so it had some rust in the front fenders, which I repaired. I drove it for a couple years and then sold it, while still keeping the wagon.

Specs

Each had the inline-four engine with a four-speed.

Factory Options

The wagon came with honeycomb style aluminum mag wheels and a roof rack.

Mods

I had some 13-inch wheel covers that I had picked up somewhere several years prior and they fit the coupe's steel wheels.

One of the Most Reliable Cars I've Ever Owned

Blog post photo

I hadn't posted this car, the 1978 Datsun 510 station wagon, in my Motortopia garage until now because I had so few pictures of it. In fact, I don't have any of the whole car...
