1979 Pontiac Trans Am (Rachel01)
Last updated Jun 3, 2009
As I'm sure you've heard a million times I had wanted one of these cars since I was about 7years old when the Smokey and the Bandit movie first came out. Back in 1998 I purchased a red 1979 trans am that I was going to clone into a black and gold car. Unfortunately my father passed away in 2000 so I moved back to my hometown of Uvalde (population about 20k) to help my mother out. One day I was driving through a rather unsavory neighborhood and caught a glimpse of the lower portion of the unmistakable snowflake rim. I stopped to inquire about the car and came to find it was a 1979 Black and Gold T-top Trans Am. The very car I had been wanting since childhood and to make things even better it still had the original 400 block although it was in the trunk and it's an original 4spd car although it was in the backseat. Only rust on the car was about the size of a silver dollar in the passenger side rear floor board. The guy said he would sell the car for $2000 dollars but he would have to find the title. So I told him that I would give him $1000 right now and take the car with me and the other $1000 when her produced the title. He agreed so I wasted no time hauling my find home as quickly as possible. Now here's where things take a turn for the worse or better depending on what side of the fence you're on. Unfortunately for the guy he got sent to prison for 25 years for burglary. Fortunately for me I just filed for lost title and now she's mine free and clear for a mere $1000. She needed quite a bit of work, but $1000 dollars for an original 400 4spd black and gold trans am has got to be a steal in anybody's book.
400 stroked to a 455 producing about 450hp and 650 ft lbs of torque. The cam is a 288/296 (231/239). Car doesn't really come alive until you are doing over 70. Backed by a Borg Warner Super T-10.
