The birth of the 2 + 2 and the Aerocoupe of the 80's are much like how the Superbird, Daytona and Talladega came to be in 1970. As 1970 approached Nascar teams were all looking for a competative advantage. At the time, as long as it was offered in showrooms you could run it. So through the 60's Ford and Chrysler all beefed up their motors and the maufacture wars were on. Motors got to the point where you could get bigger, but for everbodies benefit they maxed when the 426 Hemi rolled out. To continue to find that competative advantage Dodge and Plymouth came out with the Daytona and Superbird, respectively. The cars were aerodynamically superior to the competition. With their arrow shaped noses, and tall wings. Ford had no choice but to watch as these cars walked away from them.

Nascar tightened down on engine size as well as other rules to make the cars more competitive to one another. So for about 15 years things calmed down. Engines were eventually maindated to be 358 CI and the cars gots boxier of the assembly line as the aerodynamic rules changed after 1970.

Although Plymouth and Dodge opted out of Nascar by 1986, Ford and GM will still going hard at it. The Ford Thunderbird, Chevy Monte Carlo, Buick Regal, Pontiac Grand Prix and Olds Cutlass were all relatively boxy looking for the time save for the Thunderbird. The decade was about to see the technology age come to be with wind tunnels and all sorts of other test labs out side of the Dyno. With Ford looking to take charge Pontiac and Chevy Introduced more aerodynamic models of the Grand Prix and Monte Carlo SS. These would be known as the 2 + 2 for the Grand Prix and the Aerocoupe for the Monte Carlo SS. These models had more aerodynamic rear windows. They weren't the typical notchbacks that most people think of and known from this generation.

The "Bubble" window as most people refer to them. Reduced the drag on the car and subsequently got 5 MPH higher speeds on tracks such as Daytona and Talladega. They were produced in 1986, with Pontiac producing 1,225 and Chevrolet Producing 200. The 2 + 2 was still raced in 1987 but was not made on the production line, but as for the Monte Carlo Aerocoupe, they produced 6,052 and like the 2 + 2, used it in competition in 1989 but did not produce any.
