Head to Head

About “Wild Cherry”

A guy who works for me owns a black IROC-Z. Until he showed me his car, I wasn't really into cars at all. John's car changed all that. Within a couple of weeks, I knew I needed a hot car too. I started looking for a car that suited me, but I kept going back to John's black IROC, so that's what I decided I wanted. One day at work, he told me about an older friend of his who was selling a red IROC that he had bought brand new. He had arthritis in his knees, and it was getting worse. There was no way he could drive a stick shift car anymore. Since he hardly ever drove the car anyhow, he decided it was time to sell it. The car had been kept in a heated garage under a car cover, and never driven in rain or snow. It only had about 15,000 miles on it since new. It looked and drove like a new car. He wanted it to go to a good home, and John put in a good word for me. I don't drive it very often either - it's strictly a good weather pleasure car, just like it was for the old guy who sold it to me.

About “Redbird”

We've had Redbird the longest, about 10 years. She has been slightly modified. The 3-slow-5 is long gone. Her heart beat is a 350 Goodwrench 4 bolt with a lot of goodies ;>. The story goes something like this:
Goodwrench 350
Lunati 204/214 420/442 (448/472 @ 1.6) Hydraulic Cam/Lifters
Edelbrock Double Roller Chain
Comp Cams 1.6 Roller Tip Rockers
Crane Chrome Moly Push Rods
Melling HV55 Oil Pump
World Products S/R Torquer Heads 2.02/1.60 170 cc runners
Edelbrock Performer EGR Intake
Modified cc q-jet
Accell Billetech 60109 Distributor
Accel Coil
MSD 6A and 8.8 Wires
Edelbrock Victor Water Pump
Edelbrock Tubular Exhaust
Hi-Flo Cat
Dynomax Cat Back
Hypertech Low Temp Fan Switch
Hypertech Thermomaster Chip
160 Thermostat

And a little bit of wrenchtime.

So that's all the mods to the engine bay area, and I always feel that if you can make it go faster, (easy, really) one should also improve the whoa factor as well. So the brake job goes a liitle bit like this:
All stainless hard and braided lines.
US Brake 2.75" piston front calipers.
Slotted disks up front
New master cylinder, and booster.
Dot 5 (silcone) brake fluid. This stuff is crazy!)
Rear is stock, but those aussie calipers are pretty good.
So, yeah, Redbird can stop on a dime and give nine cents change!

We also rebuilt the entire front suspension, ball joints, inner and outer tierods, center drag link, idler arm, and added a couple of small things like, KYB struts, Energy Suspension bushings, and Edelbrock tie rod connectors. Still using the factory springs tho.

This one time at band camp...No really, a couple summers ago I put a ten bolt with a 3:73 under there, and the Wife wasn't real happy with it. She said it kept going into "tire shake", haha. So I swapped back in the Aussie nine bolt. She likes it better that way. Don't get me wrong, she can and does drive like an ace, she would put a lot you "men" out there to shame! She's from Germany and has lots of Autobahn hours. What a blast that is, but that's a different story.

We haven't done much with the stock 700 tranny, stock T/C and a little B&M shift kit is all.
