About “Baby Smurf”

I bought this model on eBay several years ago as a built-up "Glue Bomb". In April of 2011 I entered what is referred to as a "Community Build Project" on the Model Cars Magazine website, where all entrants build a model to a specific theme. The theme of this one was "Early Compact Cars". Being a Corvair nut, this was a natural for me. I completely diasaaembled the model (which took me AT LEAST 5 minutes!), stripped the paint, and got to work on it. There were a couple of areas where the body needed repair, so that was the first order of business. Then I painted it to replicate the 1960 Corvair 700 Series sedan I used to own (see "The Smurfmobile" elsewhere in my garage). While the paint was setting up, I started in on the interior. Using a razor saw, I cut the sides off of the interior bucket to make it easier to paint the four color door panels. I'd rad about this technique, but this was the first time I'd ever tried it myself... Of course, I had to do it on a model that was more than 50 years old! It actually came out really well! I added several details to the iterior that the model manufacturer omitted, including the under-dash automatic transmission shift lever, the parking brake handle, sun visors, dome light and rear-view mirror. I spent a couple of hours polishing out the 'glass' and the paint, then reassembled the model. Some day, when I have the money, I'd like to have all the chrome replated.
