VW TDI Spotter’s Guide

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

The 2010 TDI Cup edition—perhaps the sportiest TDI to roll off the VW assembly line.

Which Ones to Consider and Why

With no end in sight to the high price of fuel, many people are rethinking their daily drivers. And while hybrid and electric cars may be all the rage among the Hollywood elite and the tree-huggers, it is very easy to see that these cars are not the environmentally friendly solution that many people believe they are—since it will take more pollution-spewing powerplants to charge the things. Air Dog’s New Raptor Lift Pump for the 24-Valve Cummins

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Anyone who is familiar with a 24-valve Cummins knows the weak link in the system is the lift pump. Mounted on the side of the engine, where heat and vibration can take their toll on the unit, the lift pump pulls fuel from the tank and supplies it to the VP-44 injection pump. (more…)

Hellwig Sway Bars for Towing Stability

It’s no secret that a ¾- or 1-ton diesel pickup does not handle like a high-performance vehicle. Sure, you can crank up the power to hot rod levels, but when you hit the corners, all that unsprung weight (about 800 pounds’ worth), it’s going to roll like a tuna boat in high seas. Such is life, since everything is a compromise. (more…)

Cooling System Basics for Diesels

Friday, September 30th, 2011

So you think you have a hot diesel? Well, there’s hot and then there’s simply running hot, as in water, oil and EGT temps getting hot when you race or tow.

There are many reasons a diesel can run hot, and most of them can be easily remedied. The first thing is figuring out exactly what is causing the problem. (more…)

Our 1.9L Gets a Snow Water-Methanol Injection and Gains 5 Mpg

For the time being, no more cheap paint or free car washes for Project GTDI. We are now turning our attention to where the Volkswagen diesel needs the most help—our sub-100 hp 1.9L TDI under the hood. (more…)

Project TDI

The latest project vehicle in the Diesel World stable is this ultraclean 2006 VW Jetta TDI.

Buying a Used TDI for Fun and MPGs

Many of us realize that fuel prices will likely never drop back down to levels we’ve enjoyed in the past. The problem is bad enough that some diesel enthusiasts are considering selling their diesel trucks in favor of smaller and more economical daily drivers. So, why can’t you have your diesel cake and eat it too? You can. (more…)

How Air in Your Fuel Affects Performance

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Correlation is a funny thing. Things sometimes go together in one way but are detrimental when joined in another. Take hydroelectric dams, for instance. Water force is used to spin turbines, which produces the electricity. But mixing water and that electricity is no good. The same goes for fuel and air. Everybody knows that it takes fuel, oxygen and spark to produce combustion, but having air in the fuel is detrimental to combustion. How can that be, you ask? (more…)

Level Out Your Super Duty the Easy Way

Monday, July 18th, 2011

When it comes to suspension upgrades, diesel truck owners have a lot of options. You can get the full Monty—an 8-inch lift kit or bigger—or opt for the industry standard, which is typically a 6-inch kit that will allow you to run 35-inch tires comfortably. But for folks whose trucks are still under warranty, during which time an aftermarket lift kit could void the warranty, the choices for improved tire clearance are slim to none. (more…)

Keep Your Diesel—With One Small Addition

Monday, July 11th, 2011

One of the worst nightmares any diesel owner can have is finding his or her pride and joy missing from the driveway.

According to statistics, a car or truck is stolen every 30 seconds in the United States. And if you live in southern border areas, where smugglers target trucks to run drugs and smuggle illegal aliens, the chances of your truck disappearing are pretty good. (more…)
