11th Annual Scheid Diesel Extravaganza

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Old-school lore had it that if you were lucky, you could get a “baker’s dozen” at your local small-town bakery. For regular customers, the baker would always toss in one extra donut as a nice bonus to keep the customers coming back. So, you always got more than you paid for.

Fast forward to 2011. Technically, this year’s Scheid Diesel Extravaganza celebrated its 11th year at the Terre Haute, Indiana, Wabash Valley Fairgrounds. (more…)

NADM Hosts 9th Annual Event

One of the few “old-school” events that has survived for any length of time is Weekend on the Edge, which has been held in Salt Lake City, and Ogden, Utah, for approximately nine years. The event is hallmarked by an evening of drag racing at Rocky Mountain Raceway, just outside Salt Lake City, followed by a full open house and dyno day the next day at Edge Products, in Ogden. More recently, a sled pull had been added to make Weekend on the Edge a true diesel triathlon. (more…)

It’s a Hot Time at Diesels on the Mountain 2011

If there is such a thing as the Olympics of diesel performance, then the “Diesels on the Mountain” weekend seems to come closest to it. There are three separate events (sled pull, dyno and drags) held at three separate venues that encompass three different disciplines. All have a winner and a bunch of also-rans.

While not all competitors attended each event, they could have, and many did. There were guys flogging their diesel-powered trucks at the sled pulls and tripping the lights at the drags. In between, they were strapping them to the ATS dyno and wringing out every last bit of horsepower they could. (more…)

Huge Turnout At Third Annual Event

The rolling hills of the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania have long been the place to escape the hustle and bustle of New York City. The fresh air and green trees are a stark contrast to the concrete jungle of the city. The Poconos are also home to one of NASCAR’s biggest racetracks, and there are plenty of places to get away for the weekend. (more…)

The 2011 Dog Days Dyno Challenge

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

On July 9, 2011, Bully Dog threw open its doors and access to the dyno at its American Falls, Idaho, headquarters for this year’s installment of the company’s Dog Days Dyno Challenge.

The dyno challenge actually began years ago as a way to entertain retailers who had come to Bully Dog’s HQ for training sessions on how to use and sell the various Bully Dog products. (more…)

Diesel Competition at its Best in Indy

Indianapolis, Indiana, is known around the world as the racing capital of the world. It is home to two of the biggest events in America: the Indianapolis 500, which just celebrated the 100th running, and the U.S. Nationals, NHRA’s cornerstone event that dates back to the early days of drag racing. And, in more recent years, Indy has also gotten a reputation among diesel enthusiasts for hosting an annual must-attend event, the FASS Diesel Nationals. (more…)

Bucket List Item: National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

The National Museum of the United States Air Force is on the must-see list if you go to either the NADM event in Hebron, Ohio, or the NHRDA event in Indy.

No trip to central Ohio would be complete without a stop at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Located in Dayton, Ohio, near the Indiana/Ohio state line, the AF Museum is host to more than 300 historic planes, including the “Memphis Belle,” which is undergoing restoration, and “Bock’s Car,” the B-29 that dropped the second nuclear bomb on Japan to end World War II. NADM at National Trail Raceway

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Among the cornfields of the Midwest sits National Trail Raceway, a NHRA-sanctioned facility that is rich in drag racing history.

Opened in 1964, the drag strip has had the legends of drag racing make passes down its famed quarter-mile of asphalt. Name such as Don “the Snake” Prudhomme and Don Garlits, as well as famed racers the Hurst Hemi Under Glass and Little Red Wagon, have all raced at the facility just outside of Hebron, Ohio. Top Fuel Champion Tony Schumacher set a national speed record of 336.15 mph on this track, as well. (more…)

The NADM Diesel Country Nationals Had It All

Those who were in Terre Haute, Indiana, for the NADM Diesel Country Nationals got more than they bargained for on May 6 and 7, 2011. Sure, Ron Knoch, one of the head guys at NADM, promised a fun weekend full of drag racing, sled pulling and all-around diesel partying, but even he didn’t know the full extent of the wildness that was to descend upon the show at the Crossroads Dragway and adjoining Wabash Valley Fairgrounds. Sled Pulling Down on the Farm

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Despite the laid-back-appearing atmosphere on most American farms, a lot can happen on all that acreage. Take, for example, Uphill Dairy’s 250 acres in Hico, Texas. Sure, it has all the trappings of a 1,000-cow farm, complete with a state-of-the-art milking facility. Typically, the only diesel vehicles running around the property are trucks used for transporting products and tractors working the fields. (more…)
