2010 BMW X5 xDrive35d
Another European Diesel SUV? Hardly.

BMW Diesel SUV

Germans must think that American truck designers sit inside a Wal-Mart every morning, deciding over an Egg McMuffin that of the millions of customer requests, they’re going to make some sort of exhaust brake, integrated trailer brake and six-speed automatic transmissions standard. Don’t forget to employ circa Y2K European after-treatment technology, too. Redemption is sweet and we’ve finally prepared our comeback shall it arise in any future debates on historical automotive design.

Diners, Drive-ins, Dives and Diesels

Food Channel celebrity chef Guy Fieri is usually seen behind the wheel of a Camaro on his hit show, Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Truth be told, though, he’s actually a diesel enthusiast. Here’s he showing off his customized Kodiak, which features a spiced-up interior, lifted suspension, custom rims (not duallys) and a modified Duramax, juiced up with an aftermarket computer chip. He likes to use it for family RV outings, but asked what he hauls, he had a one-word reply: “ass.”

American Dream
Travis Newhart submitted photos of his ’04 F-350 all the way from Iraq. The staff sergeant in the United States Air Force wanted to show off the truck he calls “American Dream.” Travis worked with a company out of Madison, Ohio, to design the custom graphics running down the sides of the Ford, making it a one-of-a-kind scheme honoring the country he serves.

Project Box Hauler: ATS Turbo Upgrade

EZ 7.3L Turbo Upgrade
Improve Performance and Reduce EGTs with ATS’ Aurora Turbocharger Kit

OK, you’ve done nearly everything economically possible to your 7.3L Super Duty or Excursion. You’ve upgraded the intake and exhaust, added a programmer, and possibly even upsized the injectors. Sure the truck runs better, but you’ve noticed that the EGTs are starting to climb into the danger zone at wide-open throttle or when towing a heavy trailer up a grade. The missing element in your power recipe is more air. While the stock Garrett turbo functions well on a stock truck, it can’t keep up with the added heat that more fuel creates.

Project Box Hauler: Autometer Gauges

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Keeping an eye on engine vitals is as simple as installing a quality set of gauges. For anyone who tows with their diesel, both boost and pyrometer gauges are a must.

Project Box Puller
Keeping Track of Vitals

For our regular readers, Project Box Hauler needs no introduction. For those who have just joined us, here’s the Cliff Notes version of the series. We got our hands on an ’01 Ford F-350 dually that spent its previous life as a Castrol Racing show car hauler for John Force Racing. The truck, fitted with a well-worn 7.3L Power Stroke, was showing 200,000-plus miles on the odometer and was in serious need of attention. The buyer got the fifth-wheel trailer with the deal, hence the name Project Box Hauler.

Project Box Hauler: PML Diff Cover

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

PML offers several different finish options for their Dana 80 cover. We opted for the black powdercoated version. It comes complete with stainless steel, hex-head mounting bolts for an easy and good looking install.

The Great Cover Up

One of the keys to keeping a differential alive is keeping it cool. Utilizing synthetic rear end gear oil helps, but nothing beats addition fluid capacity from an aftermarket rear end cover, which replaces the shallow, stamped steel factory unit. Ford Super Duty diesels are notorious for having factory diff covers with blistered paint on them, which indicates things inside are getting pretty hot.

Project Box Hauler: Dana 80 Rebuild

Friday, July 30th, 2010

With the bearing races and factory shims in place, the carrier can be installed in the housing. It’s a tight fit so a little “persuasion” in the form of some blows from a drift hammer helps get it into place.

Gears For Rears
Rebuilding the Dana 80 Rear End on Project Box Hauler

There’s no debate that diesel-powered pickups are the absolute best when it comes to hauling heavy loads. With lots of low-end torque and turbocharged horsepower, diesels are the truck of choice for serious haulers. Such is the case with Project Box Hauler. (more…)

Buckeye Diesel Blast
Rain Does Not Deter NADM’s Inaugural Event

We all know the postal carrier motto: Neither rain nor sleet nor dark of night…blah, blah blah…you get the point. The point is the mail is going to get delivered no matter the conditions. In the diesel event business, it’s rare an event continues when Mother Nature deals a bad set of cards.
