Among the cornfields of the Midwest sits National Trail Raceway, a NHRA-sanctioned facility that is rich in drag racing history.

Opened in 1964, the drag strip has had the legends of drag racing make passes down its famed quarter-mile of asphalt. Name such as Don “the Snake” Prudhomme and Don Garlits, as well as famed racers the Hurst Hemi Under Glass and Little Red Wagon, have all raced at the facility just outside of Hebron, Ohio. Top Fuel Champion Tony Schumacher set a national speed record of 336.15 mph on this track, as well.

The raceway still continues to host national events, such as the Mopar Nationals and the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. One of the newest additions to the track’s long history of racing came from the National Association of Diesel Motorsports (NADM), which introduced diesel drag racing and sled pulling last year. The inaugural “Buckeye Blast” was nearly a rain-out as a result of showers and storms that blew though the area.

This year, NADM is hosting two events at National Trail; the opening was held on June 4th (under sunny skies, for a change). NADM got a break from a spate of wet weather in the area that had delayed crop-planting. The sunny weather set the stage for a highly successful diesel event.

According to the NADM, nearly 2,500 people jammed into the facility to watch 100 trucks participate in drag racing, sled pulling, dyno runs or even sit on next to the vendors midway for the show-and-shine competition. Each competitor was vying for one of the cool first-place, laser-cut trophies, fabricated by Jeremy Koch, of Dude’s Rod Shop.

Speaking of Vendor Row, among the exhibiting vendors were Mahle, K&N, Pure Diesel Power, Action Exhaust, Dude’s Rod Shop, South Bend Clutch,, Columbus Diesel, EBY Trailers, New Era Diesel, Tork Technology, JaxWax and Ohio Coal Rollers, according to the NADM.

The Ohio Coal Rollers were also the official hosts of the show-and-shine competition, as well as “Cruise Night” at the local Quaker Steak & Lube. South Bend Clutch bought out its unique mud bog racer for the inaugural Diesel Mud Bog competition, but it broke on the first pass through the goo.

On the dragstrip, Wad Moody and his Duramax-powered S-10 ProStock Pickup blistered the track, setting a new 1/8th-mile record with a 5.13 second pass at just over 125 mph.

NADM will return to National Trail Raceway on September 17th for another full day of diesel drag racing and sled pulling. For more information, contact NADM at
