MasterCraft Safety Makes a Big Impact

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

As a racer there are very few things better than unbridled horsepower and whiplash-inducing acceleration. The smell of fresh laid rubber, eye-burning nitro fuel and the heart-stopping sound of horsepower rocketing away from the starting line is what feeds this maniacal addiction called racing. It’s why competitors spend many long nights wrenching and thousands of dollars looking for just fractions of a second in the unending pursuit of victory. (more…)

Behind The Scenes — Gary Fratus

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

It takes concentrated effort to put on a successful drag racing series. Most of us are familiar with the roles of the drivers, crew chiefs, mechanics, race officials and publicists that comprise the NHRA Full Throttle Tour. But there’s one key component of the equation that labors in relative obscurity, but clearly helps keep the show on the road, the field reps of the various sponsoring manufacturers. Whether there is a need to get a new set of tires, weld a broken bracket, replace a valve train component or get a case of oil, it’s all there on the Manufacturer’s Midway, the world’s largest portable speed shop. The Airport Drags are a $10 Time Machine

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

When other sports are said to reinvent themselves, the changes are typically minor and gimmicky, artificially engineered to fatten the wallet of whomever’s in charge.  Drag racing might be unique in its ability to continue evolving the original concept while spinning off additional, specialized subspecies for vehicles being overlooked or left behind by technology or politics or the changing tastes of fans. The Course Was Rough and Daylight Often Could be Seen Under all Four Wheels

Most people think of museums as dried-up, dusty old places with no relevance to what’s happening in the world around them. Well, it’s not like that here at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona, California. For example, we recently received a call from an auctioneer who had sold an auto parts store back east. Leftover was an old trophy from the Pomona Drags in 1953. The name on the trophy was M. Serar, and the guy asked if I knew anybody by that name. I said I did. So I called my friend Rudy, and sure enough, his mom had won that trophy in 1953. What a great feeling is was to reunite Rudy with his mom’s long lost trophy. (more…)

The World Champions Have Been Crowned

The King is dead. Long live the King.

Names old and new make this very rarified list of 2010 winners. One name is glaringly absent, Tony Schumacher. For the first time in seven years, we have a new Top Fuel Champion. One name absent for four years is back, John Force. (more…)
