Ah, boys and their toys, of course, the older the “boy” the more expensive the “toy.” When it comes to Yenko Supercars the going rate for a fully restored example is on average 350-750K, but that doesn’t stop these guys from driving the hell out of them.
“Don Yenko intended for people to have fun with the cars bearing his name, and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” commented Yenko Sportscar Club (sYc) Executive Director Tom Clary. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s a survivor car, a restoration or a race car, everybody is welcome at the Supercar Reunion!”
The sYc is dedicated to the machines created by Canonsburg, Pennsylvania’s Yenko Sportscars Inc., but all types of American-built muscle cars are welcome at the Supercar Reunion. At previous events, we’ve seen Oldsmobile 442s, Pontiac T-series LeMans, GTOs, Firebirds and Buicks, and even the occasional Mopar.
Members of the Bow Tie persuasion roll up with anything from a Yenko Camaro, Nova, Chevelle or even a Corvair (Don Yenko built some badass Yenko Corvairs) to a Baldwin-Motion, Berger, COPO, DANA, Fred Gibb-Dick Harrell or Nickey Chevrolet muscle car. And dig this: They do it strictly for the fun of it. No classes, no prize money, no trophies!
Supercar Reunion XIII set up shop Friday, Sept. 3 at Madison, Illinois’s Gateway International Raceway, and was treated to some of the best weather participants could ever hope for. Track conditions were obviously ideal with temperatures in the high 70s with a slight breeze blowing, which made working on and tuning these oftentimes finicky big-block engine factory hot rods less of a chore.
Event performance numbers ran from Event Low E.T. set by Ed Rambeaux Jr. and his original Nickey Fathom Green ‘68 Camaro at 9.92-136.00 through the mid 13s. Though not the quickest, Tom Clary’s ex-Bob Hamilton “Red Alert” SS/DA ’70 Chevelle wowed the fans with its chassis-twisting launches. Big “Red” carded a Best Of 10.82-123.09.
In addition to the vintage iron there were numerous gen five ‘10 Camaros in attendance. The factory IRS suspension seemed to hamper optimum straight-line traction, but Nickey Chicago is working on this issue. Speed E.T. for the latest hatchlings ranged from Jon Clary’s LS7 427-equipped Yenko/SC (the first of the new wave Yenko Camaros) at 11.75-116.23 to the mid-12s near 120 mph.
By late Friday afternoon everybody had had their fill of drag racing and gravitated to the bar inside Collinsville, Illinois’s Gateway Center, followed by dinner where former Fred Gibb Chevrolet Parts Manager Bob Lionburger was the featured speaker. Saturday’s agenda consisted of both an indoor concourse and outdoor show and shine, the latter of which is annually sponsored by the Gateway Camaro Club. With drag racing completed, the bench racing began at 8.00 a.m., and continued well into the afternoon. By 4:00 p.m. Saturday, Supercar Reunion XIII was a wrap.
If you’re a hardcore muscle car fan, and you’ve never been to one of these events, we recommend you check it out. Better yet, dust off that old muscle car sitting in the garage, or pull your old doorslammer out of mothballs, and take it to Supercar Reunion XIV. Who knows, drag racing may become “fun” all over again.
- The concept is simple enough. Once a year sYc members gather at Madison, IL’s Gateway International Raceway, which has played host to the past 10 events with its Yenkos, COPOs, Fred Gibb cars, Motion Performance cars, Nickeys, DANAs, etc. where club members “exercise” them.
- Cars were already lined up by 8:00 a.m. Friday morning in the Gateway International Raceway staging lanes. A rather nice selection of Chevrolet iron wouldn’t you say?
- Yenko Sportscar Club competitor Rob Clary gets in one with his Daytona Yellow ‘69 Yenko/SC 427 Camaro at 12.12-112.72. This car is the fastest and quickest certified Yenko Camaro according to the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag standards, and that’s on bias ply street tires!
- Jamie Jarvis lights ‘em up with his ‘70 LT-1 engine Yenko Deuce, which ran a Best Of 13.50-103.00 at the event.
- Pete Gerling’s Fathom Green ‘69 Yenko/SC 427 is usually one of the quickest at these events. However, Gerling’s 10.71-127.13 was all for naught when he totally destroyed the rearend.
- U.S. Nationals Class Winner (1970) Ken Barnhart showed up with his Indy-winning ‘69 ZL-1, featuring the same engine, and ran an “easy” 11.48-98.33.
- Jim Parts’ Nickey Chicago-sponsored big-block ‘63 Chevy II at 10.11-131.46 was the second quickest Bow Tie at the event.
- Mike Angelo seemed to be hot lapping his ‘69 SS396. Here he is going up against Emilio Chappetta’s ‘10 Nickey Stage II-S Camaro.
- Kim Howie, the pride of Albia, IA, showed up with his ex-Herb Fox/Fred Gibb Chevrolet ‘70 Camaro Pro Stock car and made an “easy” 11.38-118.14 pass.
- Ed Rambeaux Jr. shifted his way to a Best Time of the Meet at 9.92-136.00 behind the wheel of his Nickey ‘68 Camaro big-block four-speed.
- Addison, IL, police officer Emilio Chappetta’s Magnuson-supercharged, LS-3 engine ‘10 Nickey “Black Jack” Camaro was the quickest 0-10 stick Camaro at 11.82-121.41.
- Hinckley, OH’s Grady Burch showed up with his 427/L-88 ‘67 Camaro four-speed car, and cranked out a respectable 11.99-155.21 mph.
- Event title sponsor Nickey Chicago’s CEO Stephano Bimbi stayed plenty busy driving a number of cars, including this ‘69 Nickey 427 Chevelle, which recorded a tire-smoking 13.36-97.98.
- Tom Clary was also driving his “new” ‘70 Yenko Deuce race car “YS-021” at Supercar Reunion XIII and clocked a Best Of 10.73-122.6.
- Jon Clary’s LS7 engine, automatic transmission ‘10 Yenko/SC 427 Camaro, car #1, had the quickest time for the late model cars at 11.75-116.23.
- Saturday’s Gateway Camaro Club-sponsored show ‘n shine event drew close to 50 muscle cars and there wasn’t a dog in the bunch.
- The sYc’s indoor concourse was also well attended and included this lineup of ‘70 Yenko Deuces, led by Jon Jensen’s Fathom Blue car.
- Title sponsor Nickey Chicago’s presence could also be seen at the car show with many of the same cars that raced the day before now on display.
- Ashtabula, OH’s Mark Hassett Jr. brought his extremely rare—and fast—Best Of 11.77-117.46, Baldwin-Motion Performance L-88 ‘68 Cameron. Parked next to it is an equally rare piece, Rayburn Pennington’s 454, ‘73 Motion Performance Corvette.
- Here’s Team Clary at rest. Were it not for the efforts of father Tom and sons Rob and Jon, the Supercar Reunion would not be the success that it has become. Of course, the upside to all that hard work is that these guys also get to have a little fun, too!
