This one gave me goose bumps, especially when it was driven onto the auction block Friday afternoon before a spellbound crowd savoring the high-compression battle song pulsing from the tubular headers. In an age where clones, “tribute” cars, reproductions and recreations are everywhere, seeing “Dyno” Don Nicholson’s original ‘65 Mercury Comet A/FX Super Cyclone was a trip. Restored to perfection, the Super Cyclone was fitted with the correct 427-ci, overhead cam Cammer engine, dual quads and a four-speed transmission sporting a Hurst shift lever. It was truly a vivid reminder of the simplicity and economy of design that spawned these factory bad boys. The interior looked as stark and uncluttered as a regular production model, and the engine room was downright vacant compared to the engine bays of today’s high-tech performance cars. The consignor placed a reserve of $750,000 on this fabulous Mercury, and who could argue?
