After sawing to length the tubes are dispatched to the milling machines where they are formed to the exact length and shape. The trick is to prevent them from getting too thin on the ball ends, because when the case hardening is applied (which is .008 to .012-inch deep) the ends could become brittle. Another trick is to send them to heat treat shorter in length, knowing that after this process is complete they will emerge at the correct length.
