An inaccurate tire gauge at mid-season almost cost Bill Reichert his fifth straight Top Alcohol Dragster Championship. After national event wins in Houston and Norwalk he came into Pomona with a mere 10-point lead over Chris Demke. He wasn’t able to overcome the deficit and Reichert prevailed.

LE Tonglet became NHRA’s youngest World Champ and also captured Rookie of the Year honors. What’s he gonna do for an encore?
Frank Manzo wins Top Alcohol Funny Car. Gosh, who’d a thought! It’s his 14th (12 in last 14 years). Why don’t they just give “Ace” the trophy in January and save everybody all that heartache? He added Gainesville, Chicago, Englishtown, Norwalk and Indy wins to his superlative career. Mickey Ferro at least made it interesting with a late season charge, tallying a list of four event wins.
