Note the threads on the ends of the ring gear bearing carriers. Both the carriers and housing are threaded, which allows for the ultimate in creating an exacting gear clearance between the ring and pinion gears. Too much and you have noise, too little space and you have heat and premature wear.

With the ring gear fully assembled (shown in the background) the pinion gear (which comes mounted onto a shaft) and seal are positioned into the pinion gear housing.
A technician adjusts the threaded bearing carrier using the (homemade) wrench with the red end as the dial indicators reads the exact amount of gear clearance between the ring and pinion gears.
