HOT ROD HEART

February 10th, 2010

01_thumbThere’s a lot going on these days, pretty much everywhere you look from L.A. to the water on moon. It’s complicated, at best, and that’s at any level of society. It’s like, how do I get out of this place? Most ads on TV and in print reflect folks looking to get away. The ads are powerful tools, showing everything from sitting on deserted white sandy beaches sipping a Corona to taking the latest high-tech production automobile out for a spin in the Redwoods.

There’s a lot going on these days, pretty much everywhere you look from L.A. to the water on moon. It’s complicated, at best, and that’s at any level of society. It’s like, how do I get out of this place? Most ads on TV and in print reflect folks looking to get away. That all seems swell, and it gets my vote. But getting away to Redwood country, much less a deserted beach, is just about impossible. If simpler times are the answer, then the collector car hobby delivers those times in spades. It really doesn’t matter what you’re collecting, as long as you are ardent. I’m part of that hobby, and we’re passionate about hot rods at any level, it’s what we do.

People love old cars, especially hot rods. I’ve been in this all my life, and I’ve never had anyone defame the genre. Sure, it’s a bit crazy, but that’s where independence comes from. Is it a simpler way of life? Yes, it really is. How, you ask? Let’s start with the basics. Fundamentally, the vehicles are not complicated, and in most cases they are bare bones. When you’re in a hot rod, you can feel the road and the pull of the drive train, particularly in an open car. There’s a basic mechanical feel to these cars that just can’t be duplicated by any other vehicle.

We compare open hot rods to a “four-wheel” motorcycle. When you’re running at speed, it’s just you and the machine, the sounds of the tires hitting the road and the horsepower to make it as thrilling as you dare. Like most I have a radio or some such, but at speed I’m listening to the music of a howling quick change and a screaming gear drive.

The beauty of the collector car hobby is this: your friends and family can escape the day-to-day complications with the turn of the ignition switch. When you’re up and running, these cars stir memories and make dreams of better times an actuality by making decisions with a clear mind, and banging around the countryside or downtown in a hot rod. When you’re out there, you don’t have time to concentrate on much else other than how good you have it, and are blessed to live in a country where deep down inside, most folks you come across have a hot rod heart. Simply put, that’s a very good thing.
