About JokerLS240’s Garage

About me and my passion for cars

My passion for cars actually started when I was 13 or 14 with a 1970 Honda SL100 dirt bike that was originally owned by my grandfather. He used it for hill climb racing, so the sprockets had a low drive ratio. My dad and I worked on the bike for a month or so and finally got it running again.

When I was 15, I received a 1973 Ford F-100 as a gift. It was definitely a project truck - the 240 I6 didn't run at all, the paint had faded, and it had the usual rusted out floor pans. The 3-on-the-tree shifter was something new to learn, too.

Just about everything I know about fixing cars came from working on that truck. We rebuilt the original 240, then replaced it with a remanufactured short block, later on.

I can't remember what exactly what happened that cause my dad and I to give up on the truck, but I eventually moved on to a couple Bronco II's, which also needed engine rebuilds and had many problems. Wanting to swap a 302 into one of the Bronco II's, I saved up for a 302 and C4 auto out of a mid-70's model T-bird - only $500 for a fully functional engine and trans.

The 302 swap turned out to be too costly for a kid in high school and was ditched. After burning a hole in one of the Bronco II's pistons, I bought a 1979 F-100 with a 302 & C4 for $2000.

While I didn't know it at the time, this was my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. It was jet black, sat on US Indy slots (15x8 front, 15x10 rear), nice, fat tires on front and rear, custom wood door panels, and a diamond-tucked bench seat.

To put my passion for old trucks in perspective, I actually asked for a re-ring kit for the 79's 302 for Christmas one year. During that Christmas break, my dad and I rebuilt the tired 302.

After high school, I moved on to several late-model, fuel injected vehicles. Now 10+ years later, I'm back in my old favorite: a 1970 F100 with a 390 and C6 trans.

This is going to be my baby for the next 5-10 years. Hopefully, I'll be able to afford a full restoration later down the road.
