Dubbed “the Colonel,” Art Malone was one of the “other” successful drag racers from the state of Florida. He toured extensively and became the first easterner to win the prestigious U.S. Fuel & Gas Championships at Bakersfield. Malone’s lifetime friendship with Don Garlits was rewarding on and off the track, as Garlits built his cars. Later, Garlits and Malone would team up and win the championship with an outdated car. Art Malone’s U.S. 1 was launched sixth in 1320’s Diggers series from a run of 2,500 pieces.
