The 13th Annual Southwest Nationals

All of those snowbirds have the right idea: There is a time to be somewhere in this great country of ours, but is has to be the right time. One of the prettiest sites is the Valley of the Sun area of Phoenix, but not at the height of summer. That’s why the Goodguys hold their Southwest Nationals in November (19-21, 2010, to be exact) at the gigantic WestWorld complex in Scottsdale, Arizona. It’s one Phoenix-area show that we always hit. This year, the show is celebrating its 13th year, and if the huge turnout of cars and spectators is any indication, the event will be held for many years to come. As is becoming the custom, the weekend began with a TGIF party at Hot Rods by Dean, which kicked off the festivities in grand style.

Another highlight is that Goodguys reps will pull vehicles they think are the best and put them into a separate display area so that spectators are able to see the best without having to troop all over the huge WestWorld complex. They have the Terrific 12, Ya Gotta Drive ‘em, Homebuilt Heaven, Mighty Muscle (1955-72), Goodguys Builder’s Choice and the Trick Truck Corral. There is also a large area where cars for sale are grouped as well as a killer swap meet where a huge slew of parts are on display. One nice thing about buying parts at this show is that chances are they are “Arizona parts,” and as such are in better shape. The lack of rain in the state keeps parts, especially body parts, nicer longer.

For those who are thinking of hitting the show next year, know that there is RV camping onsite at WestWorld that includes full hook-ups. Information on this show and all Goodguys events can be found on their website at www.good-guys.com (http://www NULL.good-guys NULL.com).
